No option to 'Set maximum number of occurrences' w 'Include Data Source Citations' selected? #395

I'm just getting started and wondering if this is the intended behaviour. I signed up for GBIF and would like to include citation information, but have no idea how long it may take to download all occurrences of my first species of interests if I can't set a maximum, and gave up waiting on my first try. Can you please confirm that this is the intended behaviour?

Hi Fraser,

This is the behavior of Wallace when trying to download data using "Include Data Source Citation." This option relies on the occCite package. When selecting this option, all occurrences available in GBIF will be downloaded for your species. Unfortunately, it will take a long time to download databases with thousands or even millions of occurrences, which I guess is the case for your first species.

If your species have a considerable number of occurrences, I recommend, as a workaround, downloading directly from the GBIF website. This will generate a DOI for each dataset. Additionally, you can upload these dataframes on Wallace using the user-specified module in the OCCS component. Please remember that the database to download will need these three fields: scientific_name, longitude, and latitude. So, maybe you can reduce the number of columns in Excel (or alternative software) before uploading to Wallace.

If your species has few occurrences, we will take a look to check that everything is working fine. It should not take more than a couple of minutes.

Best, Gonzalo

Thanks so much for the rapid response and helpful workaround suggestion! Much appreciated.

I can confirm that my species of interest has over a million occurrences, so I imagine I would have just had to be more patient and that nothing is wrong with the software.

Closing my issue since it seems I can do so, thanks again.
