Downstream backports #35

This would be followed after https://github.com/wankdanker/node-discover/pull/34 but wanting to submit it to try to get our desired commits for use in a released package.

@dashersw has a few useful improvements to this library in his fork, wanting to pull these upstream so we can get a new official release with them.

@aikar This all looks pretty good. These changes all look generally non-breaking. Would you agree?

node-discover@1.1.0 is on npm.
