Uncaught Exception: DeviceIoControl, 1450, "Insufficient system resources" #212

The user's machine this was first seen on was a Windows 2000 machine
running with only 128 MB of RAM, so it was presumed to be a low-memory
issue - on that machine, the user was able to work around it by
intentionally freeing up some memory prior to starting/updating PeerBlock.

The next report of this thought was on a machine running XP with 1 GB of
RAM.  The error message still strongly implies an out-of-memory condition,
with the logfile more specifically implying a potential allocation failure
from the "nonpaged pool".  A test-driver is being written right now, to
help narrow down this problem.

It has been suggested that running Norton Anti-Virus or McAfee Anti-Virus 
together 
with PeerBlock may show the same symptoms as this "Insufficient system 
resources" 
issue.

I am unsure as to whether this issue is a temporary issue that will be updated 
in 
McAfee/Norton's definitions or whether this issue is related to PeerBlock 
itself.

We still don't have a good handle on exactly what's causing this, so it's 
unlikely
we'll be able to make any rapid progress on this.  Marking it as officially 
slipped
from the 1.1 to 1.2 release.

I get the sort of error messages & crashes discussed here after PeerBlock has 
been
running for a while and I may have tried to update the lists several times.  I 
don't
see this issue when PeerBlock starts fresh from reboot.  The error seems to be
correlated with lists that are large (couple of megabytes) in size.  

I have about 26 .list files from iblocklist in my PeerBlock\lists folder. All 
of them
are under 1MB, except for 3 of them which are larger than 2.5MB, the default 
P2P, the
"General Corporate Ranges" and the "Primary Threats" lists.  When this error 
occurs
(which also causes the "Check Updates" button not to work), I close PB, delete 
the 3
large .list files (no need to delete the smaller ones) and restart PB.  PB 
would then
seem to work fine, as long as I don't try to add/update any of the 3 large .list
files.  The only way I know to include any of the 3 w/o error is to reboot.

This suggests a possible workaround: If the large .list files could be divided 
into 2
or 3 smaller ones, then these kind of errors may not occur.  Can anyone suggest 
how
to divide .list files?  I am attaching 2 log files, both with only the default 
P2P
list activated; one fresh after a reboot w/ no error, and one after 
running/updating
for a while so as to cause the error message.  BTW, often when this error 
occurs my
whole internet connection dies and I can't get it back w/o a reboot (except for 
once
when the connection came back mysteriously after a while).  I have 3GB of RAM 
and,
typically, when the error occurs at least 1GB of it is free.

Thank you so much for that link...I started to read all the post there and 
found out that my SpyBot TeaTimer thing wasn't allowing PeerBlock to work.  It 
works now!  Thanks.

I get a 404 Error trying to link to your Forum site, listed above.
As for Memory I have 2GB, and Hard Drive available is well over 100GB, WinXP SP3

I rely on PeerBlock!  Please FIX FAST!

Anybody know of ANY other I.P. Blocker to use in the meantime?

I uninstalled Slick Saving by Spigot, Coupon Printer and Bing toolbar from my 
wife's computer and the problem went away. Sorry I'm not sure witch one fixed 
the problem.

It seems sshambal above is right. I started to encounter this error last year 
after some time of operation. Shutdown and reboot the machine and normally all 
is well. Today I got that error right after starting Peerblock (actually, 
trying to start as it happens right away). After reading sshambals comment I 
checked the lists and one (Default P2P) is really over 2MB (it's some 2730KB or 
so). I deleted the file and started Peerblock. And it works. I let it update, 
it updates the list, downloads the 2,7 MB again and, bang, after closing the 
update window, you get the same error. So, it's indeed related to big lists and 
that's obviously the reason why it happens more and more - lists are getting 
bigger. Machine has still 1,5 GB free of RAM, so memory can't be an issue. But 
the parsing of the file may need very much virtual memory allocation for a 
short time and that maxes it out. Or maybe it calculates the necessary 
allocation wrong. Anyway, I think you should be able and find this error once 
you know it's caused by big lists. The error occurs first in mainproc.cpp and 
then immediately afterwards in updatelists.cpp.
