[Story]: Simple Water Balance - Compare water balance between modeled and personal calculations #2

Description

This is paired with #1 - they have quite a bit of overlap, but in some ways one is the simple version and the other the more complicated. They should be built together if we build them both. Each one involves some basic water balance.

This one is also intended to be field scale, but my recollection is that it starts simple with more config options potentially hidden in the background.

It's still a little challenging to find the user story here. I think I need to get Alfonso and Safeeq to answer some of the questions here.

Great! Sorry for taking this slow. My primary goal is trying to scope the water balance component of Water3D that we talked about at AWRA. I have some notes that you have ideas for what a minimum useful water balance tool would look like for people in Utah. So, I have a few questions for you on that. Basically, I'm looking to identify an audience and their need - for example, growers need to calculate their water balance last month, but what information are they looking to get from it? Just consumptive use, which can be obtained from OpenET, or also some measure of potential recharge/runoff based on their applied water, precipitation, and OpenET data? That's just an example, but I'm trying to figure out what information a grower or canal company might be looking for when using a water balance tool. Do you have a sense for that? Thank you!

To have this in the records, I believe we need to define: the period of analysis in the calendar year, the geographical area (a field to a canal company), and irrigation information (this may come in different flavors, and we need to define a format that allows for easy integration.

We can start very simple and add complexity. This list must include references to GW, I am not too familiar with.

  1. Measurement of “crop water use efficiency”:

ET/Irrigation (ET-Precip)/Irrigation Irrigation – ET : water volume not used. Water Balance solving. This one will allow us to narrow down towards deep percolation and other losses in the system (the opportunities for water conservation).

  1. Benefiting from OpenET historical data:

Net Irrigation water needs =Seasonal ET – up to today ET (this is the water that may be needed to obtain from the market, after adjustments for losses).

These are the initial ideas that can be easily implemented. As we understand better the water processes, we will come up with more.
