You can specify width via command line with --width=25, for example, which will take up 25% of your screen. You can also set it via a slider in the preferences.
I'm not against this, as I also do this sometimes, with the exception that I also right-align the buffer to get the output out of the way. In this sense I basically use fixed positioning.
