Distinguish between hiking, nordic walking and jogging/running routes #219

Open hholzgra opened 8 years ago

hholzgra commented 8 years ago

Feature request: add separate views for nordic walking and jogging/running routes, either as one combined or as two separate views, similar to the bike / mountain bike split

There are areas where these types of routes can overlap massively.

Expample #1: http://hiking.waymarkedtrails.org/en/?zoom=15&lat=51.99872&lon=8.53197&hill=0&route=0.715

Here where two hiking routes (A1/A2), one educational route ("Naturlehrpfad") and four nordic walking routes (only "blue arrow" completely and "green arrow" partially mapped so far) are all using ways in the same forest section ... and a new jogging route is planned for that area, too (not mapped yet as the signs have not been put up yet). Seven of these routes all start. Seven of these eight routes start at the same point near the Gadderbaum sports center.

Example #2: http://hiking.waymarkedtrails.org/en/?zoom=15&lat=52.02944&lon=8.49923&hill=0&route=0.715#

Lots of overlapping hiking routes in this area already, plus three nordic walking routes. The nordic walking routes will now also become official jogging routes, but with a slight rought difference as all three nordic walking routes share a way segment with steps that the jogging routes are going to bypass. So three more routes, even though all but some 200m are shared between the nordic walking and the jogging ones ... that will lead to way segments that are part of nine different hiking/walking/jogging routes in total ...

I was once considering making a map for fitness trails but dismissed it then because so few were mapped. But that was a long time ago and things have improved since then. Maybe it's time for a 'sports view' that includes jogging, nordic walking and fitness trails (the latter preferably with pois where the fitness stations are).

The problem with the examples you showed is that they all have been tagged route=hiking/walking but I suspect that this was just done so they show up on this site. The wiki says there is route=nordic_walking and route=running. Are those the approved tags for this?

For fitness trails there is route=fitness_trail and leisure=fitness_station.

I know about route=fitness_trail for "Trimm-dich-Pfad", but I somehow thought route=nordic_walking and =running were still just proposals ... don't know how I got that idea. I had started to use =foot instead of =hiking for the new running route network "Bielefelder Runden" to somewhat distinguish them from the real hiking routes, now I've changed route types to "running" for these and to "nordic_walking" for the walking routes already mapped earlier ...

At the moment there seems to be around 400 route=running, which I guess for the moment could be useful to show in the hiking map?

Luzandro commented 7 years ago

Most of the running routes in my area are tagged as "hiking", but I don't want to change them - and probably "break" someones work - as long as there aren't any tools, that use route=running. IMHO running and hiking should be separated, nevertheless as a first step it could still be useful to show "running" on the hiking map, so there is less incentive to tag it incorrectly.

A little side note regarding demand and quantity: I never ever saw a route dedicated for inline skating or even knew something like this existed until I found your map :)

Just to be clear, I'm sold on the idea of adding a sports view for jogging/fitness trail/nordic walking. It's more a matter of actual execution. If somebody else wants to give it a try, I'd be happy to help out. (@hholzgra something for the hack weekend?).

If you are not a programmer there is still something you can help with to get the process started: some design elements are needed for the new site:

If you have any suggestions add them directly to this issue.

unfortunately I won't be at the Hack Weekend this time, had a bad cold building up since Wednesday and now started to also have fever, so I'll better stay at home ... :(

I cannot really agree on the idea of a split of hiking vs. nordic_walking. First, overlapping routes at a starting point is not a reason but just a fact, as every singular route will certainly be marked on the ground with its individual sign. At points where routes meet there will always be a whole set of different signs to be found. Second, the difference between preferred routes of mountain_bikers and ordinary bikers is much bigger than between the ones used by hikers and nordic_walkers. To be honest, I could not detect a difference in the quality of any of the tracks/paths I've walked in my area so far. It's more a matter of naming, often influenced just by the local tourism board. Last, when orientation is needed e.g. in the forest, the hiker will happily take directions from the nordic_walking signs as well as vice versa, whereas the clear distinction between mountain and regular bike routes can save lives. Not displaying all walking routes on the loniva hiking overlay anymore would be a big loss for both "old-style" hikers and nordic_walking fans. Cepesko

I think a map showing running and jogging routes and fitness trails would be great. I'd probably display nordic walking trails on both this map and the hiking map, if that's possible. My suggestions for the design elements from above:

Hi Sarah,

In France we have a lot of "trails" (we use the english word for hiking path used for running). They are tagged with route=running.

The path are the same, but the running routes are longer. Is it possible to add a new layer running.waymarkedtrails.org ?

Or at least render them in hiking.waymarkedtrails.org ? (This will avoid tagging for the render, one could use route=hiking;running or worst route=hiking)

Danke

My comment from 2017 still stands: it has to be on a new layer. I won't have time for that in the foreseeable future but I will be open to add a new layer that is contributed by someone else.

Support for route=fitness_trail would be greatly appreciated!
