This already works when using the image tag, e.g. https://hiking.waymarkedtrails.org/#guidepost?id=3734997144. I'm not a fan of these extra tags for every photo site. In my opinion it creates extra work for mappers and data consumers alike.
Hi @lonvia
I'm a mapper, and at least for me, having the image shown is a positive thing :) I've already loaded hundreds of them!
Up to you to decide. I used the "wikimedia_commons" tag because it's the one recommended by the documentation, over the "image" one and any other. See: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:image Also considering that Wikimedia Commons share the same open values of Openstreetmap, giving it a special treatment could makes sense.
If not, I'll switch to use the "image" tag. Happy that it's shown!
Cheers! Andrea
Hi @lonvia
I'm starting to use the "image" tag (in combination with wikimedia_commons), so closing this request.
Thanks anyway!
Hi,
I try opening again [EDIT: ok, apparently I can't] this issue as suggested by Mateusz_Konieczny in this forum thread.
Considering that:
So, the image tag is going to be always preferred by mappers. [...] At least until someone can convince waymarkedtrails.org and other sites to support the wikimedia_commons tag.
or The reason given by the mappers is usually "because $APP doesn't resolve the links
.Maybe in two years the situation has changed and implementing this feature will be possible in the future?
Thanks, Ivan
Hi,
Reopening with the new information provided by @ivanbranco
Supporting wikimedia_commons= tag for guidepost images will avoid the annoying duplication that there is now in the database, with image= and wikimedia_commons= tags pointing to the same link.
Thanks, Andrea
Note also that Wikimedia Commons is safer to use -Wikimedia Commons images are limited to freely licensed ones and you can get machine-readable copyright data to display attribution and so on
Hi,
An update regarding this issue: There is now a MapRoulette task to move image links from 'image=' to 'wikimedia_commons=', meaning that images are now disappearing from Waymarkedtrails.
See: https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/41410
This is obviously an unpleasant condition for all the mappers, like me, who intentionally use the 'image=' tag to have images displayed on Waymarkedtrails.
Sorry to insist, but if Waymarkedtrails could support the 'wikimedia_commons=' tag, it would completely solve this issue.
Thanks, Andrea
Was there any update on this one?
Hi
It would be wonderful if a weblink to the image of guideposts is shown together with other information. Maybe even a small clickable image.
Now it's possible to compose manually the link from the information provided, but obviously normal users will never know about it.
This is a guidepost example: https://hiking.waymarkedtrails.org/#guidepost?id=7707861371 This is the linked image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:20200712-valcava_roncola-66.jpg
This will be also an incentive to mappers to add such information.
Thanks in advance!
