Can one work while studying overseas? It depends on the length and type of program you will be attending. Your eligibility to work will be shown on the immigration stamp in your passport. International students are allowed to work for 20 hours per week during term days and full-time during holidays. Many institutions have 'Job shop' to help students find part-time jobs. Job vacancies are also advertised in newspapers and online. There are also many national and regional employment agencies, run by both government and private organizations, which can advise on the broad range of opportunities available to their client businesses and industries. Most employers will want to see your resume and sometimes; they take an interview before hiring.

What are Sandwich and Foundation programs? Sandwich programs are made-up of a combination of periods of study and time spent in Industry. The course duration extends to 4-years instead of the usual 3-years, for all bachelors’ courses. Foundation programs are of a 1-year length and are tailored for students as an alternative route to bridge between their qualification and that, which is required for entry into a degree program at the International University or College.

Is it tough to get Visas? Student visas can be obtained given proper documentation. Most of the applicants from India who provide a confirmed offer from a University/College abroad and evidence of financial support for tuition fees and living costs are issued visas.

What documents do i need to present that I have permanent ties in India? Various documents can prove that you have permanent ties in India - namely property papers, job offer letters, awareness of the job market. But what will actually convince a Visa officer is your conviction. If you are not personally convinced that you need to come back to India, then it will be tough to prove it to somebody else as shrewd as a Visa officer.

IELTS vs TOEFL Often international students are confused between choosing IELTS or TOEFL, as universities abroad ask for either exam scores. It is up to you as a test taker to decide which of the two exams to take, but remember that IELTS is more preferred in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, while TOEFL is popular among applicants to universities in US and Canada.

What is the difference between GMAT and GRE? The GMAT is the standardized test for getting admission to a business school whereas GRE is required for getting into a graduate school. Now, even certain business schools have also started accepting GRE as well. Similar to GRE, the GMAT exam comprises of a Verbal and Quantitative section. In GMAT, the two sections are combined to give a composite score of 800.

What is the difference between GMAT vs CAT? GMAT or otherwise known as the Graduate Management Admission Test and Common Admission Test or commonly referred to as CAT are the two most widely accepted management entrance tests, scores of which are accepted by all the top B-schools, including the IIMs. The basic difference, between the two, is that while CAT is a national level entrance exam for students looking for admission to Top Business Schools in India, GMAT is held at a global platform and helps students for admission to top B-Schools worldwide. Conducted by Graduate Management Admission Council, GMAT scores are acceptable mainly in the case of NRI/Foreign students who want to study in India. The IIMs accept the GMAT score of domestic candidates for executive management programs.

What is SOP? An SOP is a long essay required by universities abroad and nowadays some of the Indian universities during the application process. As the full form of SOP reveals, a Statement of Purpose is an essay stating the purpose of applying to a particular course in a particular university. This essay consists of a gist of who you are, who you want to become, and how ready you are to pursue a certain course in an institution. The document seeks to understand the candidate’s life, the motivations for the chosen career path and his/her goals. Hence, you should discuss the past incidents that have influenced your career path in a specific domain wherein you aspire to grow by joining a course/college.

What is a Letter of Recommendation (LOR)? The LOR is a document that provides the admission officers with a comprehensive insight into your suitable candidature, for admission into the concerned University. The full form of LOR is a Letter of Recommendation. This letter aims at enabling the Admission officers to gain a clearer and favourable picture of your experience, achievements, contributions, and skills communicated by the recommender through the recommendation letter.

Admission Essays: What they are? Admissions Essays are very much a written essay but unlike an SOP, there is no standard format. Universities would provide the applicants a list of required questions or essays. They usually vary as per the requirements of the University’s program and created carefully to ascertain the eligibility of the applicant. Also, and more importantly they are designed to prune the list and find the candidates that would be the correct fit for their program.
