I think the dependencies.json approach for using dependencies should be encouraged more since it does not make a difference functionality-wise but it is easier to change dependencies for the package maintainers since they can provide code and dependency changes at the same time (in a single release/commit) and don't need to wait for me accepting their pull requests to the channel. However, I'm not sure about the wording on this on so I'm leaving it open.
