Need to some non-public way to make the nominee aware of the Facebook group. Private message?

Perhaps use send dialog? https://developers.facebook.com/docs/sharing/reference/send-dialog

Send dialogue is "not supported on mobile devices."

Also not possible to repopulate with the selected user (I don't think).

No options really so they are going to reconsider.
