Leveraging the Web We Want initiative to inform future compat efforts #4

This issue is to discuss how and if the Web We Want initiative fits in this developer research.

WWW is a place for users of the web platform to provide signal about missing things. It's a central place not related to any browser vendor where people can say what they think is missing.

@ststimac leads the effort right now and there's a cross-company group of people who regularly get together to triage new "wants".

It seems to me like this pretty clearly fits in the picture and could be helpful to identify users' needs.

Now, one problem I see is that it originally started as an event-based thing (where wants would be discussed and upvoted at conferences), but covid put a stop to this. So, the number of wants and upvotes is probably low because of this. It would benefit from being a more recognized, central, place that browser vendors/spec groups point to for user feedback.

Thoughts?

As I dive back into Web We Want, I've been reviewing submissions and people are still submitting items on GitHub as wants. I think discussing how WWW fits into this WebDX charter would be good so we don't duplicate efforts. There is value in a place for devs to easily submit their wants/needs.

That sounds great @ststimac! The overlap is particularly strong with https://github.com/web-platform-dx/developer-signals, although that is just a skeleton of an idea so far. I'd love to use WWW as one of the signals there though.
