Art: Scilly's digivice "Morpher" #1407

Threw together some sketches of a possible design for Scilly's divigice/seed. The idea is these devices/seeds are wearable, so it can be an accessory which transforms into a bot.

This bot is a little watch with straps made out of legs. His head is the faceplate and it has his eyes on it. He can have primitive expressions. The faceplate is emissive, so it can light the dark. To use the watch you poke his eyes.

img

Normally he is a watch but he can unhook himself and crawl up your hand like a little bug with flexy arms. If he sits in Scilly's hair it would be very cute.

But wait, there's more! He also has a fairy mode where he inflates his arms and glows really bright, making him look exactly like a fairy from OOT.

img

He has a lot of forms so Scilly called him Morpher. If he is a Navi, it makes thematic sense since in some ways Scilly is Link and you can have the same dynamic.

This would be used for the five second teaser. It's probably not much modeling, only a slight amount of animating, and would be a good spice.

Does this need a concept pass, or is it figured out enough as-is?

This is also somewhat inspired by the Magic Leap comic. They did a cool job explaining lore behind these "Leapers" that would tether to the back of your brain to give you access to the world.

You can imagine one of these souls/devices could perform a similar "jacking in" function with its tentacles.

@GaladWarder Yes I think that would be useful. Perhaps some concept posing with Scillia and this thing in its various forms.

Hopefully it's not too hard, since it is designed to be simple. There is leeway in the interpretation, I'm just trying to set the vibe -- personable, fun, cute, adaptable, and can be a physical thing that we produce at some point.

We want to connect the concept of these digital-souls-in-a-shell to the characters themselves and this was the best way I could think of.

If you twirl the legs of this thing then this object will look like a growing plant, or a raindrop, or a ghost with flames, which is another good analogy.

Tael is the darker fairy from Majora's Mask, which is the initial picture I had in my mind.

Though I feel like this device, like a watch, makes sense in either dark or light tones.

Took a crack at this, there will be a bit of fiddling with the mechanics if it needs to be rigged, but as long as it's not going to be super close to the camera, this should work:

Can do a texturing pass on it later if needed, just wanted to get initial sketches in greyscale first.

avaer commented 3 years ago

It looks good!

The poses are great. Maybe also a walking one? These arms are supposed to be super stretchy so it can walk on both 2 legs and 4, maybe a bit like Doctor Octopus.

Let's keep some more obvious "hands" in the modes that don't have hands. I realize it's rounded to make it softer and friendlier to being a wearable, but I want to keep the impression that this does have hands which it can walk on if it chooses to. Right now the watch just looks like a watch, rather than a pal that grabbed onto your wrist and kind of looks like a watch.

Some ideas:

As for texturing, I think we should keep it quite simple. I see the main colors being white, black, and green (referencing a "seed").

Applied the feedback discussed in the various meetings, here's a V2 pass:

Also, some orthos and expression tests as requested!

I think it all looks good. The faces could be put into a sprite sheet for the model to use.

8x8 Emote Sheet, 4096x4096 resolution, version 1.

Here's the orthos for some component ideas, these can also be easily tweaked Tried to keep them very simple so that they will all look good/'work/ in any configuration. Have not done bodies on this sheet, it looked like Dream was already on them. I can circle around to them if needed, though!

Finally, I need to sync with Texta for wing shapes - not sure if drastically different shapes will break the rig since it looks like it's a lattice; there will be different wings innately from the different arm patterns, so maybe that is enough. If not, I need to know how far I can 'break' the rig/lattice before making that sheet.

avaer commented 3 years ago

@plankatron The faces can be UV'd onto the model.

Also, those all look like cool designs worth attempting!

plankatron commented 3 years ago

agreed @avaer . once i have this main one down it should be doable to add variant model types such as those, looks good @GaladWarder

Shell models from DreamCo:

This includes things like feet and ears, which could be separated out as ingredients.
