Problem type: Video or audio doesn't play Description: There is no video Steps to Reproduce: I've noticed that any Vimeo video, embedded or not, does not playback and gives me the following error: "Player error The player is having trouble. We'll have it back up and running as soon as possible.". Please note the same error does not occur on a Flatpak installation of Chrome.

We appreciate your report but I was not able to reproduce this issue. I was able to watch videos on Vimeo as expected.

Suggestions: • Clear cache/data/cookies, disable Ad-blocker (if available), or create a new profile (without syncing/importing data) and check again • If there are any changes made to the default settings of the browser (e.g. in about:config), please revert to the default settings

Hi, @azlata. I have already tried all the above. I believe an important detail that was not included in the initial post was that I'm running Fedora Workstation 39. Are you able to test that issue on a fresh Firefox install in a Fedora 39 VM?

What I would do usually to test this kind of issue, is:

Type about:profiles in the url bar.
Choose Create a new profile.
Call it deleteme or anything you please.
Then start it. (this way you will be sure that nothing is interfering, no ghost caching etc.)- make sure account sync is not performed, as the extensions will be imported in the new profile.
Test.

Note: You can return to your old profile at any given time by accessing "about:profiles" in the address bar

If this doesn't work, can you tell us if it reproduces using Firefox Nightly?

Hi @azlata. I didn't sync my profile or install any addons. This issue seems to be related to Fedora 39 missing some playback dependency required for Vimeo to play. Likely ffmpeg related. Should I instead take this issue to a Fedora forum?

I recommend testing the Firefox Flatpak. If it works there, then yeah, likely an issue with Fedora's specific dependencies or their buildconfig, you'd have to file a bug with them, we have no influence over what they do.

Note that profiles do auto-upgrade to a new version, but they can't downgrade. Since the Flatpak is a Firefox 125, but your main profile is still on 124, please test the Flatpak with a blank profile (or make a backup of your profile folder first, and then restore it afterwards). :)

Finally found a solution for those who may have the same problem. Installing these plugins fixed it for me. I'm addding a PR to their documentation to make this resource easier to find for people having the same issue.

I'd still file a bug. I'd consider it a blocking issue if something as basic as video playback isn't working - maybe they can consider adding these packages as a dependency to Firefox.

Just one correction to this comment of mine above: what fixed the problem for me was actually installing the packages openh264 and ffmpeg-free on Fedora. There's discussion in this Bugzilla ticket for getting the Firefox rpm package maintainers to include those packages as either recommended or required dependencies.

@RelicCornhusk if you try a new profile and go to the "Plugins" section of about:addons and then click "Check for update" using the gear menu by "Manage your plugins" do you get any plugins showing up?

According to https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2023833#c25, there's a Fedora-specific bug that prevents OpenH264 from being installed. That might also mean that Firefox can't install or update it itself?

It's not clear to me if that's referring to our OpenH264 GMP plugin or a different packaging of OpenH264 which I know Fedora has done in the past.

I didn't realize you were on macOS. In that case this issue is likely unrelated to the problem that you're having. If vimeo doesn't work in any browser I suspect your issue is either with macOS or your hardware.

@jrmuizel I used to play Vimeo normally on macOS12, but suddenly it stopped playing. I upgraded to macOS14.4.1, and I still play it normally on YouTube. There should be no hardware issues, and my computer is relatively new. macStudio Apple M1 Max.
