Browser / Version: Firefox Mobile 85.1.1 Operating System: Android 8.1.0 Tested Another Browser: Yes Chrome

Problem type: Something else Description: Firefox zooming crashes Night Shift & other apps Steps to Reproduce: Firefox Daylight 85.1.1 (Build #2015789953) AC: 70.0.18, 7b5e8bb00 GV: 85.0.1-20210127184413 AS: 67.2.0 Thursday 1/28 @ 8:15 AM

Night Shift 4.00 by Ascendik (blue light filter) NoRoot Firewall Beta 4.0.2 by Grey Shirts Norton 360 5.1.0.5628 by NortonMobile Chrome 88.0.4324.152 Moto g5 Plus phone, Android 8.1.0

To recreate: From Google Play Store, download: Night Shift (free) NoRoot Firewall Beta (free) by Grey Shirts Norton 360 (free trial)

Go to Night Shift Settings Filters page and tap circle+ to create a new filter. Select RGB filter and set Red 255, Green 0, Blue 0, Alpha 127 to make the screen pink. See screenshot.

In Firefox go to: https://www.skipmcgrath.com/articles/selling-on-amazon/amazon-fulfillment-centers/

Zoom in and out to the max. Repeat. When Night Shift crashes, screen will turn bright white and Night Shift symbol (circle with big dot at center with 2 radials) will disappear from Android status bar. Frequently, NoRoot Firewall Beta also crashes and its brick wall symbol will disappear from the Android status bar. This is scary — no firewall! Sometimes, Norton 360 also crashes and its circle with checkmark symbol disappears from the Android status bar. This is also scary — no security/antivirus! The above happens on many websites when zooming. No problem with Chrome.

No problem with Chrome.

The last line of this report ("No problem with Chrome.") was not displayed when I pasted the report into the report box — hence, the duplication from adding it. Problem with displaying report???

@hp-OneEarth

We appreciate your report. Based on what you described, the issue is related to changing default settings of the browser and it is not a Compatibility issue. For this project, we try to focus our effort on layouts, features, or content that works as expected in one browser but not in another.

hp-OneEarth commented 3 years ago

I hope your comment refers to my comment about entering "No problem with Chrome" a second time since it wasn't displayed when I was entering the report.

Issue 66838 has nothing to do with changing browser settings. It has to do with being too dangerous to use because it crashes several apps when zooming. Chrome works fine. Firefox doesn't.

softvision-raul-bucata commented 3 years ago

@hp-OneEarth Could you please go into your browser, type in "about: crashes" and supply some relevant information that you see there so we could investigate this further?

hp-OneEarth commented 3 years ago

Firefox doesn't hang or crash. But I do have to reload the page I was on. Firefox has a serious problem when zooming because it crashes apps including the ones I mentioned in issue 66838: a blue light filter app, a firewall app ⚠️, and an antivirus app⚠️. The instructions which I provided in the report to recreate the problem are intended to make it easy to SEE the crash since your screen will change from pink to white. To make what's going on even more discernible you could add noisy sounds to notifications in the apps and then you could hear them restarting besides seeing their symbols reappearing in the Android status bar.

@hp-OneEarth So this is the result I get following your instructions: testmuist

As you can see, Nightly does not crash any app: -regarding the NightShift app, it did not change colors or crashed after zoom-ing in and out several times. -firewall app and antivirus app both behaved as expected, with no crash reports or errors.

Tested with: Browser / Version: Firefox Nightly 210207 (🦎87.0a1-20210203093146🦎) / Chrome Mobile Version 88.0.4324.93

Operating System: OnePlus 6 (Android 10) - 2280 ×1080 pixels, 19:9 ratio (~402 ppi density)

The report I submitted was for FIREFOX DAYLIGHT. So the fix that was put into Firefox Nightly (to fix a similar previously reported issue 58898) should be applied to FIREFOX DAYLIGHT. (I now don't have the current problem with Firefox Nightly, only with FIREFOX DAYLIGHT.)

softvision-raul-bucata commented 3 years ago

@hp-OneEarth I could not reproduce the issue using Firefox Daylight 85.1.2 (85.0.1-2021-0204182252) as presented in the GIF below: mna

Could you please update the browser to the latest version and give it another try?

hp-OneEarth commented 3 years ago

It still happens with: Firefox Daylight 85.1.2 (Build #2015791449) AC: 70.0.19, 45ec22f76 GV: 85.0.1-20210204182252 AS: 67.2.0 Friday 2/5 @ 3:48 AM

See before and after zooming screenshots. Note that the Night Shift symbol has disappeared from the status bar in the "after" screenshot. This happened 2 times in a row and NoRoot Firewall Beta was knocked down one of the times with additional zooming (which is why I turned off cellular data before zooming).

No problem with Chrome or Firefox Nightly.

Firefox Beta 86.0.0-beta.3 (Build #2015792145) AC: 72.0.9, c7d077128 GV: 86.0-20210207185447 AS: 67.2.0 Monday 2/8 @ 6:02 PM

I tried Firefox Beta. Zooming in on the aforementioned website crashed Night Shift. Continuing zooming after Night Shift crashed caused NoRoot Firewall Beta AND Firefox Beta to crash.

I tried zooming in and out for several minutes with Firefox Nightly — no problem.

Maybe you need to install all 3 of the apps (Night Shift, NoRoot Firewall Beta, and Norton 360) to try with Firefox Daylight.

Firefox Daylight and Firefox Beta — problem. Firefox Nightly and Chrome — no problem.

softvision-raul-bucata commented 3 years ago

@hp-OneEarth Thank you for your reply. Since the issue is confirmed that is not reproducible on the latest version of Firefox Nightly, this means that the issue has been taken into consideration for the next release of Firefox 86 (Daylight), which will take place on 2021-02-23.

hp-OneEarth commented 3 years ago

The bad news: I switched from using Firefox Daylight to Firefox Nightly and while doing routine work the problem occurred on a different website. So I tried to recreate the problem and, with much effort, succeeded. It appears that with Firefox Nightly there is a much smaller crack for something to fall through.

(I should mention that the Google Android System pop up " ... has stopped" has never appeared from day one.)

The good news: With all the apps which were mentioned in the initial report Force Stopped, the problem can be easily and quickly recreated using Firefox Focus by zooming in and out on the website provided in the initial report. Keep zooming and screen changes to Home Screen wallpaper only with no apps.

Firefox Focus 8.12.0 (Build #350192153 🦎 85.0-20210118153634) Moto g5 Plus phone, Android 8.1.0 https://www.skipmcgrath.com/articles/selling-on-amazon/amazon-fulfillment-centers/

I managed to get a recording, which got saved, of Firefox Focus up to the point at which Firefox Focus froze. (Previous attempts to record the action failed because the recorder app would get knocked down and not save the recording.) A few seconds after the freeze, when the screen changed to Home Screen wallpaper only with no apps, I took a screenshot. A few seconds later, the Home Screen was repopulated with apps. Play attached MP4 and see screenshot.

Firefox Daylight, Firefox Nightly, Firefox Beta, Firefox Focus — problem. Chrome — no problem.

@karlcow is there anything we can do here?

karlcow commented 3 years ago

@softvision-oana-arbuzov @hp-OneEarth So that doesn't seem to be a direct bug of Firefox. but more a weakness of Night Shift when Firefox is involved. I would probably recommend to open a bug on Night Shift because they would be able to have a stack trace of the bug in their own app. This is probably not really a webcompat bug in the meaning we usually consider them in this project.

That's indeed weird and probably frustrating for you @hp-OneEarth

hp-OneEarth commented 3 years ago

My last comment states "With all the apps which were mentioned in the initial report Force Stopped, ..." which includes Night Shift. Therefore, since Night Shift wasn't running, Night Shift has nothing to do with this problem.

karlcow commented 3 years ago

@hp-OneEarth So I'm trying to understand, help me, I'm confused. What do you want to report here?

This project focuses on issues where websites behave differently in different browsers. Here you are mentioning a breakage not happening in Firefox but related to something(?) crashing when using Firefox. You said Firefox is not crashing. :)

What is crashing for you? Android?

hp-OneEarth commented 3 years ago

At some point in this saga, it appeared that the problem no longer occurred in Firefox Nightly. However, if you read on from there, it reappeared again in Firefox Nightly. To summarize, as of my last comment, the problem occurs in Firefoxes Daylight, Nightly, Beta, and Focus but not Chrome.

@hp-OneEarth sorry, if it feels weird, but I'm still confused.

the problem

what is the problem?

You said:

screen will turn bright white

and

Firefox doesn't hang or crash.

Is it only the screen of Firefox which is white? Or the full Android? Aka if you switch to another app do you get back to a normal screen?

hp-OneEarth commented 3 years ago

At some point in this saga, it appeared that the problem no longer occurred in Firefox Nightly. However, if you read on from there, it reappeared again in Firefox Nightly. To summarize, as of my last comment, the problem occurs in Firefoxes Daylight, Nightly, Beta, and Focus but not Chrome.

Initially, I was alerted to something going wrong when the screen would lose its pink shade and become bright while zooming in and out in one of the Firefoxes. (I use Night Shift to turn down blue and green, leaving pink, so I can sleep at night and also reduce eye strain.) Night Shift was getting knocked down. Eventually, over time, I noticed that what was happening was some variation/combination of crashes/stoppages/malfunctions of Firefoxes, Night Shift, NoRoot Firewall Beta, Norton 360, and recently AZ Screen Recorder.

To narrow down the problem, at the end I eliminated everything except Firefox Focus and AZ Screen Recorder. Maybe, if you start at the end of this long Issue and read events backwards in reverse chronological order, it would be easier to follow.

What is the problem? Sometimes it appears that Firefox crashes and has to be restarted and sometimes takes down some of the apps which have to be restarted if they don't restart themselves. Sometimes it appears that Firefox survives but takes down some of the apps. Android doesn't provide any pop-up crash messages so there are no traces to review.

I think this started around the introduction of Firefox Daylight. I know I didn't have any problems before then.

Closed ==> Open? Yes??

karlcow commented 3 years ago

Closed. This is not a webcompat issue as explained above. It's not related to the interaction in between a web site and a browser.

hp-OneEarth commented 3 years ago

Two-finger zoom and Firefox 88.1.3 (Build #2015808505) crashes on almost any website. See screenshot. No problem with other browsers. This is a WebCompat issue. Screenshot_20210514-065453

karlcow commented 3 years ago

Two-finger zoom and Firefox 88.1.3 (Build #2015808505) crashes on almost any website.

which definitely makes it not a webcompat issue. This could be an issue with Firefox, memory and a specific device. :)

You might want to file a bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?format=guided
