URL: https://www.wsj.com

Browser / Version: Firefox 92.0 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.15 Tested Another Browser: Yes Safari

Problem type: Site is not usable Description: Missing items Steps to Reproduce: Articles are not loading. They load for a second, then disappear, like there is a DOM issue. This started happening recently. I don't have any extensions or themes installed. Clearing the cache and restarting the browser did not help.

Thanks for the report, but I'm not able to reproduce the issue. For me the main page and articles load correctly. URL: https://www.wsj.com/articles/robinhood-is-going-on-a-college-tour-to-recruit-new-customers-11631703600?mod=hp_lead_pos8

Tested with: Browser / Version: Firefox Nightly 94.0a1 (2021-09-14), Firefox Release 92.0 Operating System: Mac OS Big Sur v.11.13.1

@ventsyv can you check the console and post a screenshot with it here so we could investigate?

ventsyv commented 3 years ago

I'm using Firefox 92.0 on MacOS Big Sur version 11.5.2. It works when I open it in a private window but not in regular window.

ventsyv commented 3 years ago

Dev console is showing a number of errors. Attaching file wsjErrors.txt

Also attached in the dev console log in private mode. The number of errors is significantly lower. wsjErrors_PrivateWindow.txt

Thanks @ventsyv.

@karlcow could you have a look over the logs?

karlcow commented 3 years ago

@ventsyv in the screenshots you posted nothing is missing, apart of the ads… which is a good thing (no?). I opened a private window and had no issues at all on a fresh profile. We need more information to be able to do anything. Both @softvision-oana-arbuzov and I can't reproduce. This is probably frustrating.

ventsyv commented 3 years ago

Actually most of the stories are missing. I'm attaching screenshots that demonstrate this. As you can see, the story on the Texas abortion law, the US stock futures, the J&J booster shot, are all missing. Even if I turn off the enhanced tracking protection the articles remain off. Here is normal mode vs private mode. As you can see most of the content is missing when in "normal" mode. This occurs even when Enhanced tracking protection is off.

That is quite a lot missing for you. I'm not sure what could be the reason. For me the content loads similar to Chrome. image

Ive checked your logswsjErrors.txt` and there are some errors:

Uncaught
Exception { name: "NS_ERROR_FILE_CORRUPTED", message: "", result: 2152857611, filename: "https://www.wsj.com/asset/djbid.js", lineNumber: 1, columnNumber: 0, data: null, stack: "e@https://www.wsj.com/asset/djbid.js:1:23064\nDa@https://www.wsj.com/asset/djbid.js:1:24409\na@https://www.wsj.com/asset/djbid.js:1:65084\nbuild_min</Z.prototype.init</</</<@https://www.wsj.com/asset/djbid.js:1:68703\nbuild_min</Z.prototype.b/<@https://www.wsj.com/asset/djbid.js:1:64585\no@https://www.wsj.com/asset/djbid.js:1:28604\nVb/s.onreadystatechange@https://www.wsj.com/asset/djbid.js:1:27866\nnrWrapper@https://www.wsj.com/:340:28287\n", … }

What do you think @karlcow ?

karlcow commented 3 years ago

Yes I think there is another reason for the issue than just missing content. We would have received a lot of reports about WSJ failing as it is quite a popular website.

One of the differences I see is that you are logged in. wsj-dsk

@ventsyv Could you do these steps?

  1. Type about:profiles in the url bar
  2. Create a New Profile (call it deleteme)
  3. Start it (a new browser window will open)
  4. Go to https://www.wsj.com/
  5. Report what you see.
  6. Log in
  7. Report what you see.
  8. Quit your browser
  9. Go back to your normal browser
  10. Type about:profiles in the url bar
  11. Remove the deleteme profile (and all its associated folders)
ventsyv commented 3 years ago

Everything works with a new profile. Logged into my firefox account in the new browser and it still works. My "regular" browser didn't work at any point (before and during the new profile, and after it was deleted). I deleted the temporary profile.

Hope that helps.

softvision-oana-arbuzov commented 3 years ago

Thanks @ventsyv for confirming.

karlcow commented 3 years ago

so you confirmed that something addon or config is broken in your profile. This is not a webcompat issue, but something independent of what we can act upon.

ventsyv commented 3 years ago

I only have 1 extension and disabling that does not fix the problem. I've not changed the settings other than to set some exceptions in the enhanced tracking protection (wsj.com is one of them). Disabling the ETP does not fix the issue.

Is there a a way to export my settings and diff them to the default set?

karlcow commented 3 years ago

@ventsyv yes. You can type about:support in the URL bar.
