Dave,
I would like to upgrade it, but I think that it will probably be the next LTS (3.5 I think) before it gets upgraded. I have to balance working on it versus supporting my clients, so unless Fonts.com, who initially paid for it, wants to sponsor a round for 3.0, it will probably be a little bit longer.
Sorry I don't have better news!
J
Hi John,
Many thanks for taking the time to reply. That's a shame, but I completely understand! Could I ask - how much (roughly) was the level of sponsorship? I wonder if you could crowdsource it on Joomla! Or even consider making it a commercial extension (I would certainly have paid for it).
Best wishes,
Dave.

Hey Dave,
That's a great idea. :)
I'll have to investigate setting up a campaign on Kickstarter. The larger
issue is spreading the word, but around a 1,000 people download it a month
so it could be that simply adding some info to the download page would net
the required amount of support.
I'll let you know once I've set up a project page,

Hi John,
I wrote to Sander Potjer (who is on the Community Leadership Team) with this idea and he replied:
“It is an interesting idea, and it might be good to ask developers of several free extensions if they like it and don't see it as a way to be forced to develop a new version. So I think you did a great job starting the discussion on the forum. Another idea is to write an article for the Joomla Community Magazine, thats gets a lot of attention always and might help to get other ideas and others involved. I have seen a few developers that tried to gain money in this way before themselves, not remember which developers, but would be interesting to see if it worked out well. For me personally the reason to develop a 'commercial' extension was to be able to develop new versions and provide support. So in the end it is also a choice of the developer.”
If you do set up a project page on Kickstarter, perhaps either I could, or between us we could write something for the Joomla Community magazine? I don’t think it has to be a huge article, just a brief explanation and a link to the project page?
What do you think?
Best wishes,
Dave.

Hi John,
I’m not a JCM author at all, but I do find some of the articles interesting and I thought it was a good idea by Sander to ‘spread the word’ and see what response it gets from the community. I’ll certainly send you a copy of the text before I submit it, or perhaps I can write a section from a ‘site-builder’ point of view, then you can add one from the developer’s point of view. Does that sound ok?
Cheers,
Dave.

Hi John,
I’m not a JCM author at all, but I do find some of the articles interesting and I thought it was a good idea by Sander to ‘spread the word’ and see what response it gets from the community. I’ll certainly send you a copy of the text before I submit it, or perhaps I can write
a section from a ‘site-builder’ point of view, then you can add one from the developer’s point of view. Does that sound ok?Cheers,
Dave.

Hi John,
I wrote to Sander Potjer (who is on the Community Leadership Team)
with this idea and he replied:“It is an interesting idea, and it might be good to ask developers of several free extensions if they like it and don't see it as a way to
be forced to develop a new version. So I think you did a great job starting the discussion on the forum. Another idea is to write an article for the Joomla Community Magazine, thats gets a lot of attention always and might help to get other ideas and others involved. I have seen a few developers that tried to gain money in this way before themselves, not remember which developers, but would be interesting to see if it
worked out well. For me personally the reason to develop a 'commercial' extension was to be able to develop new versions and provide support. So in the end it is also a choice of the developer.”If you do set up a project page on Kickstarter, perhaps either I
could, or between us we could write something for the Joomla Community magazine? I don’t think it has to be a huge article, just a brief explanation and a link to the project page? What do you think?
Best wishes,
Dave.

Hey Dave,
That's a great idea. :)
I'll have to investigate setting up a campaign on Kickstarter. The larger issue is spreading the word, but around a 1,000 people download it a month so it could be that simply adding some info to the download page would net the required amount of support.
I'll let you know once I've set up a project page,

John,
How does this sound for my section?
From the outset, it might be useful to know that I’m a site-builder, not a developer. I’ve been using Joomla since version 1.0, cannot program in PHP but I’ve taught myself enough CSS to be able to adapt templates to what a client wants. All the J! websites I build, which are usually for friends or small clients start from a set of ‘base’ extensions that I have installed and without naming too many names, I’ve got most of NoNumber’s extensions, Akeeba Backup and Admin Tools, ACL Manager, JSN Power Admin and JCE to name a few. Recently several clients have asked for different fonts on their website and I found Web Fonts a really easy way to implement this, so that’s joined the list on a standard build. As J! 3.0 is now released, I wanted to investigate responsive websites and so am gradually constructing the same base website from which all others are built. Whilst several extensions have been updated, Web Fonts is not yet J! 3.0 ready and so I contacted the developer who, perfectly understandably, said that this would only happen once he had time as paid work must come first. This got me thinking – if there was sufficient demand for a particular free extension to be updated, perhaps some crowdsourcing might work! I contacted John who liked the idea and so he has set up the project and we agreed to jointly write an article for the Community Magazine to share this idea with others.
Best wishes,
Dave.

Hey Dave,
I submitted it without a working link early last week. It took a little
bit for the Kickstarter team to approve it, but Tuesday I updated the
article with the published project link. The editors might have sidelined
it because it was missing the link. I believe that sometimes they have a
second round of late articles and this may be the case this time. If they
don't, I think you're right and it would probably be smart to un-publish
the project until march (if possible.)

Morning John,
Many thanks for this. Do you think you’ll estimate the cost in time
for the February edition of the JCM? All the same, I’ll write a draft article and get in touch with Sander to see how we go about publishing when it’s already. Thanks again for helping me with this initiative!
Dave.

Just wanted to write and let you know that I'm still getting Kickstarter setup and estimating the cost of the changes.
I like your idea with the article and would be happy to talk about the developer's point of view.

Hi John,
I’m not a JCM author at all, but I do find some of the articles interesting and I thought it was a good idea by Sander to ‘spread the word’ and see what response it gets from the community. I’ll
certainly send you a copy of the text before I submit it, or perhaps I can
write a section from a ‘site-builder’ point of view, then you can add one
from the developer’s point of view. Does that sound ok?Cheers,
Dave.

Hi John,
I wrote to Sander Potjer (who is on the Community Leadership Team) with this idea and he replied:
“It is an interesting idea, and it might be good to ask developers
of several free extensions if they like it and don't see it as a way to be forced to develop a new version. For me personally the reason to develop a 'commercial' extension was to be able to develop new versions and provide
support. So in the end it is also a choice of the developer.”If you do set up a project page on Kickstarter, perhaps either I could, or between us we could write something for the Joomla Community magazine? I don’t think it has to be a huge article, just a brief explanation and a link to the project page?
What do you think?
Best wishes,
Dave.

Hey Dave,
That's a great idea. :)
I'll have to investigate setting up a campaign on Kickstarter. The larger issue is spreading the word, but around a 1,000 people download it a month so it could be that simply adding some info to the download page would net the required amount of support.
I'll let you know once I've set up a project page,

Hey Dave,
I submitted it without a working link early last week. It took a little bit for the Kickstarter team to approve it, but Tuesday I updated the article with the published project link. The editors might have sidelined it because it was missing the link. I believe that sometimes they have a second round of late articles and this may be the case this time. If they don't, I think you're right and it would probably be smart to un-publish the project until march (if possible.)

Hey Dave,
I submitted it without a working link early last week.

How much do you want to upgrade it to 3.0?
Hey Celius,
We were trying to raise $2,000 to cover development costs. It didn't look
like the community was currently that interested in having a 3.0 version,
so probably sometime in the future... :)

Hey Dave,
I submitted it without a working link early last week.

Hi John,
We didn’t quite make it into the February magazine? I wonder if it’s worth extending the Kickstart project if people aren’t going to read about it until March?

John,
That's absolutely fine! I'm not looking for any work as such out of this, but it would be great if you get some benefit from drawing people to your extensions and your company. I'll write my bit, send it to you and we can submit when we're good to go.
Best wishes,

Morning John,
Many thanks for this. Do you think you’ll estimate the cost in time for the February edition of the JCM? All the same, I’ll write a draft article and get in touch with Sander to see how we go about publishing when it’s already.
Thanks again for helping me with this initiative!

Hi John,
I’m not a JCM author at all, but I do find some of the articles interesting and I thought it was a good idea by Sander to ‘spread the word’ and see what response it gets from the community. I’ll certainly send you a copy of the text before I submit it, or perhaps I can write a section from a ‘site-builder’ point of view, then you can add one from the developer’s point of view. Does that sound ok?
Cheers,
Dave.

Hi John,
I wrote to Sander Potjer (who is on the Community Leadership Team) with this idea and he replied:
Best wishes,
Dave.

Hey Dave,
That's a great idea.

Hi John,
I’m not a JCM author at all, but I do find some of the articles interesting and I thought it was a good idea by Sander to ‘spread the word’ and see what response it gets from the community. I’ll certainly send you a copy of the text before I submit it, or perhaps I can write a section from a ‘site-builder’ point of view, then you can add one from the developer’s point of view. Does that sound ok?
Cheers,

Hi John,
I wrote to Sander Potjer (who is on the Community Leadership Team) with this idea and he replied:
Best wishes,
Dave.

Monotype (the folks at fonts.com) who hired me to build the extension as it currently is, have said that they're interested in funding the update to Joomla 3. This happened during the course of these remarks and I'm going to put together a proposal to do the update. Are there any suggestions from you two for tweaks and improvements that could be made to the extension that I should put in the proposal?

Hi John,
Hope life is treating you well – just wondered if there had been any progress with WebFonts for J3?

It's unpublished, though I don't know why.
However, I don't think the Kickstarter campaign is going to work. I've had the banner up on the download page and the most I've got in this time is a $2 contribution, with around 100 downloads a day- there just is not community support for it.
I'm considering developing it anyways, but this will be a little ways out.

Hey Dave,
I submitted it without a working link early last week.

Hi John,
I’m not a JCM author at all, but I do find some of the articles interesting and I thought it was a good idea by Sander to ‘spread the word’ and see what response it gets from the community.

Best wishes,
Dave.

Hey Dave,
That's a great idea. :)
I'll have to investigate setting up a campaign on Kickstarter. The larger issue is spreading the word, but around a 1,000 people download it a month so it could be that simply adding some info to the download page would net the required amount of support.
I'll let you know once I've set up a project page,

Hey Dave,
Monotype is interested, but the timeline for it is delayed until 2014 when budgets are set. So instead, I'm planning on releasing a commercial J3 version with support and additional features in December. If you're interested in providing any input or suggestions for it (access to an early release too) just hit me up through the BBD contact form.

Hi,
I really appreciate an extension such as this being released into the community for free and I know it's not high on your list of priorities, but are you thinking of upgrading it to J3.0?
Many thanks,
