repo cannot handle git rc release versions #158

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. % git --version                         (W49 - 12/10@13:34:50 UTC)
git version 1.8.3-rc3
2. try to use repo

What is the expected output?
it works

What do you see instead?
it doesn't
