Lettering / Inscription in MARC

Framework (& CCO) stipulates inclusion of the following for inscriptions (lettering)

• Included inscribed titles (ie title written on the object) as a title entry
• Transcribe inscriptions on the object into a specific Inscription field, add any necessary explanation, such as where it is on the object.

The current situation at Wellcome:

• Everything inscribed on an object is entered into 246 16. It is tagged Lettering in Works. This is actually a specific alternative title field for 'Caption title', but Wellcome content includes more than the caption/inscribed title.
• There is an additional Lettering notes field at 514. 514 is actually a field used to record Data quality for cartographic materials - should we be using it? It is tagged as Lettering note in Works.

Ideally we would like to:

• Use 246 16 for Inscribed titles ONLY - and have it display as an alternative title, or even tag it as an inscribed title
• Identify a suitable field to record all other Inscription / lettering data. This would be free text. Could we continue to use 514? And tag it appropriately in Works. Or is there an alternative field we can use?

Issues The legacy cataloguing clashes with the above approach

Concluded best option is to continue to use 514 for all inscription info. Tag will ideally change in Works to Inscription (or similar) rather than lettering Note.

Any Inscribed titles will be recorded in 245 with an identifying source of title note
