Poking around at this project a little bit, I went over the docs for creating Gem based themes and followed it for the base files.

There is still probably something I'm not doing right based on the _data folder discussion still going on in https://github.com/jekyll/jekyll/pull/5470
not sure the best way to test this

@nschonni I was under the impression that servermessages.html was for general messaging not 404. Like an under construction kind of message.

@nschonni So where should we put the settings of the _config.yml files? In the repo that's calling the theme?

Ok I think that I'm starting to get it. The config file doesn't allow the theme to build right now. I'll keep investigating.

I think the _config.yml can still be used, but it ends up getting merged with the parent project that's using the theme
