One option is to setup a Matrix bridge into Discord, so members can use either Matrix or Discord depending on their preference. Or we say f proprietary and go Matrix only. Other options are those like Mattermost.

If you want I can setup a matrix server? A bridge might be good initially as people will be happy to onboard onto discord.

One question I have is around membership. Do we want the chat to only be accessible to members (which is how most hackerspaces I've seen operate, usually using Slack), or is it an open chat with some private channels for members? And if we use Matrix, how would that work for membership.

In general, I'm interested in a way where becoming a member gives you an SSO provider that you can use for other member services, e.g. real-time chat, discussion forum, wiki, etc.
