Figure out health and safety rules #7

Open ahdinosaur opened 2 months ago

Am thinking each heavy tool has an induction process and you can only use after being inducted. But needs to be codified, Hopper was serious about this.

I think the first place to start would be to figure out what the legal requirements are for a space like us. Apparently Hackland thinks the liability is low, because it's "people using their own tools", as opposed to paying for a service and using their tools. But I have no idea. If we know what's legally required, then we can figure out how best to meet those requirements.

Health and Safety at Work Act 2015

Key considerations:

  1. Risk Assessment: Identify potential hazards (tools, machinery, chemicals) and implement control measures.
  2. Training: Ensure members are trained to safely use equipment.
  3. Emergency Procedures: Set up fire exits, first aid kits, and evacuation plans.
  4. Signage: Clear signs for hazards and safety guidelines.

I created a very crude first wiki page and added this document to it. It can be found here: https://github.com/whacknz/whack/wiki/WHACK-(Wellington-Hackerspace)-Health-and-Safety-Policy

I also changed the title to include "-- DRAFT." We shall remove that once we've got approvals ;)

From the Men's Shed Toolbox:

In particular: https://www.worksafe.govt.nz/managing-health-and-safety/getting-started/understanding-the-law/volunteers/keeping-volunteers-healthy-and-safe/#lf-doc-82650

image

However we do still have a "General Duty of Care" for visitors: https://www.worksafe.govt.nz/managing-health-and-safety/getting-started/understanding-the-law/volunteers/volunteers-key-things-to-know/

So is there a way we can write this up to explain our legal H&S requirements?

But also, here's the Men's Shed general H&S policies: https://menzshed.org.nz/resources/safety/
