3 years ago I decided to merge this without review as it's been sitting here several months and it started getting conflicts. It still looked very reasonable and a huge improvement from a quick glance.
I hope this makes no normative changes, but it does make some major changes in how things are structured as a result of having to rewrite text anyway to ensure everything has the appropriate objects to work on.
