Hi magellan, this is codezero, I foolishly got muted from where I would
usually contact you and I had some ideas (mostly relating to the thread).

If you had to buy all your oxygen it would make an interesting mechanic, 
explorations might not always be worthwhile. This would also be an
incentive to leave your visor open on an atmospheric planet, if you wanted
to go ahead with diseases or whatever (ammonia, acid splash).

there could be commodities, {oil , wood , fruit, fiber , drugs} that
correspond to different plants, making plant creation randomisation funner.
The amount you get from each plant depends on the characteristics of the
plant along with your science officer.

there could be more officers that are optional and specialise in certain
fields, ie a botanist excels a science officer in gathering plant data, but
takes a penalty for other scientific actions, only the best modifier is
chosen. So a lev3 botanist might gather plant data while your lev3 science
officer will gather animal data, but a lev5 botanist might be better at
gathering animal data than a lev3 science officer. This system would also
allow custom officers/heros, with specialisations in varied fields in
various categories. There could be 3 or so different roles under the
obligatory science , gunner and pilot categories.

I would think about implementing some of this stuff myself and sending you
the relevant subs if you like the ideas but don't feel like doing them.

Personally, if you want some mechanic to make only some explorations worth it I 
would 
advise it taking fuel to land the ship, ala Star Control, which this game 
already 
reminds me alot of.
