Still able to communicate with a dead science officer

On 0.1.11, I was reading the Quickstart guide (very helpful) and walking
through the keys on the planet surface. My science officer was killed by a
geyser, and I was walking back to my ship when I came across a worm. I hit
c to communicate, and I got an error message about my science officer not
being able to understand the creature.  This seems like a bug to me... I'm
not sure if I ever would've successfully communicated or not, but at the
very least I should be told that he's dead and unable to even attempt
communication.
