Trapped Underground Forever

Using 0.2.3:

Landed on a 'very interesting bio readings' planet, started having 
hallucinations.  Went into an underground tunnel.  Several hundred turns later, 
I still haven't found the exit.  It's possible I mined it away, but should that 
really happen?  Is there any way to escape?  At this point, I've mined away 
100% of the area surrounding where the entrance /should/ be and I can't find it.

After over a thousand 'turns' spent underground, the captain decided jetpack 
suicide for them and their crew was the only option.

Happened to me again.  Ventured into a natural tunnel, and the exit disappeared 
as soon as I entered.  Spent a few thousand turns bumming around, digging 
through falling rubble and evading lava, before attempting to turn my gun on 
myself.  Using f then pressing 5 then aiming at myself caused an error and shut 
the program down.

0.2.3 Error #12 in  -1:EP_FIREEFFECT exploreplanet.bas was in the error text 
file.

Amazingly, it must have autosaved before I landed on the planet!  When I loaded 
up, I was back in space - strangely, the planet I'd just landed on showed that 
I'd 'explored' some of it already, including the area of the natural tunnel.
