What kind of license should we use for the project?

We want the code to be open source, but we should protect the name (idreamoftoast) and the images we create.

This is a good question. Have you looked at either the MIT or BSD licenses?

whiskeylover commented 11 years ago

I have looked at MIT, Apache and GPL. Neither of them say anything about protecting brand related files (like images) while keeping others open source. I might be wrong though because I'm not a lawyer.

^ looks like Apache might cover it

whiskeylover commented 11 years ago

Don't you have to file for trademark though? I know copyright is automatic.

danriti commented 11 years ago

no idea about a trademark. is that even necessary? i'm thinking it might be overkill for this, but its your call if you want one.

This License does not grant permission to use the trade names, trademarks, service marks, or product names

it sounds like service marks covers images and product names will cover the name.

whiskeylover commented 11 years ago

That looks okay. I'll upload the license file with the default apache license if that's okay with you.

:+1: ship it!

Done.
