Client request (trivial) #58

Closed ratkins5 closed 9 years ago

ratkins5 commented 9 years ago

Can the other languages (displayed in the box on the bottom of each page) be first-letter capitalised for consistency please; thanks.

tobes commented 9 years ago

The language is the name of the language in the language and as such the capitalisations vary. I could make this change but it would be very English dominant.

let me know if they really want it as it is trivial to change

Can we close this?

Discussed this morning, they would like all to appear equal from the user's perspective. It's understood that English is the master language within the admin function but shouldn't appear prioritised in the user experience. Give me a call if a discussion would help.

tobes commented 9 years ago

Does that mean 'leave it like it is'?

ratkins5 commented 9 years ago

No, taken as they asked it means capitalise Francais, Español etc (so that the ordinary user perceives parity). But I know that the English-only-capitalisation was signifying that English was the master language in admin terms. Didn't know if this request therefore carries a consequential cost elsewhere.

No, the reason is that in we call our language English and the french call theirs français if we had german that too would be capitalised ie Deutsch so we are using the correct name for the language in it's own language.

So we could capitalise them but that is then incorrect in the language it is written in. I think we should respect the different languages rather than trying to Anglicise them

tobes commented 9 years ago

saying that wikipedia capitalises them so I think it'll be fine so I'll do the change to make the client happy - it is the little things they care about

ratkins5 commented 9 years ago

Ah, well I stand corrected then. Your approach seems the right one to me. I've just relayed that back to check. Well, either way, no big deal so whatever makes them happiest...

ratkins5 commented 9 years ago

Yes, word their side is, accepted that lower case grammatically correct, but UN uses capitals, don't want to create offence via misunderstanding etc, capitalise 'em all!

tobes commented 9 years ago

Ok, this is done I will update the site at some point when they are not using it. I am assuming that they use it during office hours say 9am - 6pm uk time and that I can make changes outside that time to provide updates etc.

ratkins5 commented 9 years ago

OK that's cool. Thank you.

tobes commented 9 years ago

I'll close this now and they will see the change when I do the next update
