So it looks like the OpenXML sdk is the best solution for this, although adding webapi to the application and then having a user document query the database is another option as well.

I mentioned my issue to my coworker Alfred, whom was a saint and whipped up an example of exactly the mechanism I need to implement in his free time. Now I can just extend it to what I need to do. If I'm really lucky it will just work on the first try.
