WAV sound broken in Chromecast firmware 1.17.46278 #698

From: https://productforums.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/chromecast/ekIjTXzPZ_E

Casting any content with type wav (PCM unsigned 8), Chromecast crashes and
reboot.
Eg tested with sound files at http://www.wavsource.com, and casting to
chromecast with various android app: google play music, BubbleUPnP.
Also applies to containers Webm that contain the audio track in wav media type

The data are: first-generation Chromecast with 1.17.46278 firmware.
In previous versions of firmware no problem.

-----------

We can confirm this issue. WAV-support is broken with the latest
firmware-update and this is affecting many of our users now.
It doesn't matter what casting-app we are using, nor does it matter if we use
our custom receiver-app or the default receiver.
It also doesn't matter if we cast local WAV-files or public WAV-files available
on the internet.

Once the CC should play a WAV, it will hang and reboot.

Using MP3 is still working well..

Hope this issue is addressed asap.

Please share receiver logs after successfully reproducing it. Also, from the
Android app share feedback report with the text "for Issue 698" in the
description.

Can you tell me how to actually share the Chromecast-logs? It hangs & crashes
once you try to cast a WAV-file to it, even with the default-receiver.

Should be easy to reproduce.

Please find the instructions here:
https://developers.google.com/cast/docs/debugging and how to send feedback
report here: https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/6189374?hl=en.

Thanks for the instructions. I have reproduced the issue on the Chromecast (let
it play a WAV file leads to immediate crash & reboot of the CC).

Then I have sent the report from within the Chromecast-app with title "for
Issue 698".

Looking forward to your feedback :)

I confirm this issue. It's sad as it is not the first regression following a
firmware update, and users discover it for you.

Was the cast team able to reproduce this issue ?

I can give easy to follow repro instructions if needed.

Please do provide the repro instructions (along with any test files you used),
it would be very helpful.

1. install BubbleUPnP:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bubblesoft.android.bubbleupnp
2. start BubbleUPnP
3. in the top navigation drawer, in the renderer section, select a Chromecast
v1 running firmware 1.17.46278
4. go into the Playlist tab
5. tap the top-right 3-dot menu and select "Add stream URL"
6. In the dialog, add this URL: http://bubblesoftapps.com/test.wav. Give it a
title and press OK
7. Still in the Playlist tab, tap the new entry to play it
8. The Chromecast will attempt to play the stream then will shortly crash and
reboot

When I play the test wav Chromecast crashes and restarts. The problem presents
itself to me. Thanks for your help.

When is this problem going to be fixed?
I have $$$ of audio equipment based around a Chromecast and WAV audio files
stored on a dedicated NAS which can not now be used because the Chromecast has
stopped playing the files.

Can you please give an indication of when this will be fixed? My entire
collection of FLAC audio is now useless with Chromecast as my primary means of
playing it (via WAV transcode). It's been a long wait for something which
originally worked well.

When can we expect a fix for this issue? I first posted this to the Chromecast
group back in November 2015 and still no resolution. How can it take this long
to fix a regression? Anyone in Australia subscribed to this? I'm interested in
how one might seek a refund or exchange to CC2 given this has to be a breach of
consumer law.

Fixed with firmware 1.18.55065.
But playback of 24-bit WAV is broken and result in very garbled sound (white
noise), for which I will open a new issue
