I would love to see this workflow support github issues, including issues assigned to me and issues that mention me.

Is there an API for that? If so, feel free to add it in or let me know where I can find the docs and when I have time I can look into it.

Looks like there is a github Issues API: http://developer.github.com/v3/issues/
