turns out most of the code here isnt actually chery-pickable into the 0.4.x-deno branch so ill just switch the base back to main and deal with the conflicts in #44

afaik most of this stuff landed in 0.5.x anyways and there's a fair number of merge conflicts so unless i missed anything, this may be able to be closed

hey there! all of this seems to have gotten into the codebase back before 0.6 unless i'm mistaken. if there's stuff in here that isn't in the codebase, please let me know so i can take a look and add it back without dealing with all of the merge conflicts
