When the individual emoji modal is open, the only way to close the modal without adding an emoji to a collection is to click outside of the modal. Having either a close icon or allowing the escape key to close this emoji might be a nice touch.
Suggestion irt keyboardability: If there were a close icon, might be nice if it were DOMwise after the rest of the fields, so that it could be easily tabbed onto. Just a thought.
