RAM usage ramps up on Linux #2993

Wire version: 3.5.2881 Wire for web version: 2019.08.22.1145 (i think? the about dialogue just gives two numbers without labeling them.) Operating system: Ubuntu 19.04 disco Which antivirus software do you have installed: None

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Start wire, I guess leave it open to a group chat?
  2. Leave it sit, keep interacting, chat on other versions of the wire client, leave it overnight, etc.

What is the expected result?

ram usage will stay roughly similar.

What is the actual result?

ram massively spikes upward - i've seen it get to 3 GiB.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if possible. i have some screenshots of what this looks like when it happens in the GNOME process monitor:

demonstrating the problem, with a list of wire-desktop processes, one of which is listed at 2.8 GiB of memory, while the rest are all lower than 300 MiB

and after a fresh restart: a set of wire-desktop processes all sitting at reasonable ram levels below 250 MiB

also, apologies this is all in GiB, the GNOME system monitor just seems to like that as a metric. this is a separate issue from #2239, as it is not a problem with voice or video calls.

I just had to close Wire since it was eating up all my 8 GiB of RAM. o.O
