Using var to declare a variable is supported in PHP 5 for backwards compatibility, but isn't required since the minimum WP version is 5.2.
Added class constructor method to properly assign an empty array to $unfiltered_substrings.
Fixed a couple of inline docs to match the function parameters so my IDE would quit screaming at me so much.
Changed the require statement to use the full path to the file instead of relative loading.

I made some other changes that automatically got added to this PR and overwrote the original code I tried to submit :no_good:.

I'm updating this PR with the new code changes and will open another with the original JS update.
