Wix toolset 3.14 isn't working too with VS2022 17.3 Preview ARM64. The VS2022 Wix Extension seems to install correctly but is not shown under installed extensions. When I use the latest 3.14 wix toolset [3.14.0.5721], Wix successfully builds my MSI files on Windows 11 ARM64 on a M1 macbook Air (Parallels) with VS2022 17.3.0 Preview 2.0 ARM64. The VS2022 Wix Extension still shows as not installed in the Extension Manager, but Wix Projects and Wix Extention Projects are loading without errors. For the wix extention project I needed to renew the refenerence to the wix.dll file.

FireGiant (a Visual Studio partner) was sent a bit of information from the Visual Studio team about the expectations for extensions in VS ARM64:

Do you need to start migrating your extensions immediately?

Ultimately, ARM64 VS is very much a work in progress since many of the expected Visual Studio workloads and features are not going to be enabled initially. Some of this in-progress work currently includes enabling support for making your extensions ARM64-compatible. As a result, we're currently not pushing you and other extenders to migrate your extensions to ARM64 at the same velocity that we did with VS 2022.

We hope to have the support for ARM64 extensions in place within the next few weeks. Once the support is completed, we'll release an additional blog post and documentation with details on how to properly migrate your extension.

At this point, there is no additional information about supporting Visual Studio ARM64 in an extension.

Here is a arm64 version of Votive 2022 which installs correctly under ARM64 Visual Studio 17.4.3 and 17.5.0 preview 2.

FYI, I don't have an ARM64 system, only normal X86 64-bit system, but I could never get past the following install issue with the official Votive2022.vsix using VS 2022 Community Edition:

12/28/2022 02:26:58 PM - Cache failed. Retrying download of 'WixToolset.VisualStudioExtension.Dev17,version=1.0.0.22'.

I read all the closed issues, I have the latest VS, tried all the work arounds, etc. but nothing worked. I've been using the WiX installer with VS for years with no issues, this was a showstopper for me. So, I figured I would try yours -- why not, nothing else was working. Amazingly, it installed!!

Interestingly it also "basically" worked - just would not show the settings dialog from right-click properties on the WiX project - but everything would build, etc.

Then I thought, since I got "something" installed, why not try uninstalling your ARM64 version, then reinstalling the official. There was some error during uninstall of the ARM64 version, but it continued and finished - then normal Votive2022.vsix finally worked!!!

I have no idea why this works?! However, perhaps this can give someone knowledgeable about WiX / vsix installers a clue as to what the "real issue" is here?

Regardless, sharing here for the next hapless, struggling soul in case this solution - using your ARM64 build as an intermediate step - works for them too...

I expect the private build works because it is not signed. The official build is signed. The VsixInstaller seems to have issues installing signed VSIXes in some situations. Someone that reproduces those issues could work with the Visual Studio team to help root cause the underlying install issue.

I may not be a good candidate since the official .vsix will install now. Regardless, I think this has to do with some kind of root cert issue on some Windows machines, which, I think, i.e., would hope, would be managed automatically via Windows updates. Obviously, something is not quite right there.
