ECMWF : Richard Mladek, Sebastien Villaume

Summary and purpose

This document proposes new GRIB2 Code Table 4.2 for parameters related to energy/water budgets.

Action proposed

The team is requested to approve the content of this proposal for inclusion with the next update of the WMO Manual on Codes.

Discussions

The tables in this proposal contain parameters (for ozone, energy, mass and water budget) that will be of crucial importance for the next phase of ECMWF Reanalysis project (ERA6) which will start its production in 2023.

re: https://github.com/wmo-im/CCT/wiki/Teleconference-26-and-28.4.2022

No objections but some uncertainty over which category some of the new parameters (those related to 'pure' energy as opposed to temperature etc) should go in, help requested. Sibylle to consult with experts in DWD.
sebvi commented 2 years ago

I really would like to reach a consensus as soon as possible to be able to proceed with the branch. Thank you

https://github.com/wmo-im/CCT/wiki/Teleconference-18-and-19.5.2022 note:

last table will be a new sub-category and update the table with the list of categories

sebvi commented 2 years ago

During the meeting we favoured creating a new category for the energy variables. The ozone variables should be encoded using the mechanism of chemical constituents from Common Code Table 14 and a physical parameter from discipline 0 category 20.

@SibylleK : Are you happy if I call the new category for the thermodynamic parameters: "Thermodynamics properties" ?

SibylleK commented 2 years ago

I am happy with this proposal, but I got the comment of a colleague that maybe:

"Thermodynamics and energy forms properties"

could be another option worth considering, because kinetic and potential energies might not be associated directly with thermodynamics by everyone (but this is of course also a matter of taste).

sebvi commented 2 years ago

Thank you @SibylleK for the suggestion. Maybe we could use "Thermodynamic and Energies"

sebvi commented 2 years ago

I was planning to assign this new Thermodynamics category to 8 ... until I realized we somehow have an inconsistency: We don't have any entries in Code Table 4.2 for categories 8 to 12 (this is why I chose 8) but we actually have those number assigned in Code Table 4.1 (although entries 9-12 are marked as deprecated .... but not entry 8!!!):

Parameter category by product discipline,Product discipline 0 - Meteorological products,8,,Kinematic stability indices,,,,Operational Parameter category by product discipline,Product discipline 0 - Meteorological products,9,,Temperature probabilities,,,,Deprecated Parameter category by product discipline,Product discipline 0 - Meteorological products,10,,Moisture probabilities,,,,Deprecated Parameter category by product discipline,Product discipline 0 - Meteorological products,11,,Momentum probabilities,,,,Deprecated Parameter category by product discipline,Product discipline 0 - Meteorological products,12,,Mass probabilities,,,,Deprecated

I have checked in earlier version of the Code Tables (I checked version 5) and we don't seem to have ever populated this category 8.

I think this should be discussed at the meeting and possibly open a separated issue.

@sebvi this branch has not been updated yet. will you be able to do it soon?

sebvi commented 2 years ago

oh! I have it ready locally but forgot to push it ! will do it this morning sorry @amilan17 !

sebvi commented 2 years ago

sorry for the delay, it is now updated

marijanacrepulja commented 2 years ago

@sebvi there are inconsistency for some of Code Table 4.2 entries branch vs proposal,

category 1 - moisture in branch 154 Column integrated eastward cloud ice mass flux in proposal 154 Column integrated eastward cloud ice water mass flux

in branch 155 Column integrated northward cloud ice mass flux in proposal 155 Column integrated northward cloud ice water mass flux

in proposal 162 Column integrated divergence of cloud ice water mass flux in banch 162 Column integrated divergence of cloud ice mass flux

category 20: atmospheric chemical in proposal 80 Column integrated divergence mass flux in branch Column integrated divergence of mass flux

category 21 in proposal 10 Column integrated northward kinetic energy flux

in branch (it is typo kintic instead of kinetic) 10 Column integrated northward kintic energy flux

sebvi commented 2 years ago

Ok I will update the proposal to reflect the content of the branch. I removed "water" from "cloud ice water" to be more consistent with the other occurences of "cloud ice" in Code Table 4.2, the last 2 are typos, thank you for spotting.

marijanacrepulja commented 1 year ago

@sebvi the note under discipline 0 - meteorology, category 20 - Atmospheric Chemical Constituents is specific to ozone. Can you consult with relevant RD colleagues to reword the note and make it generic. Thanks

sebvi commented 1 year ago

Ah yes I removed the reference to ozone at the beginning of the note but not at the end. I have edited the proposal. That said, I don't think we added the note in the branch and I don't remember why. Let me know what you want me to do: leave it as is or add the note in the branch, Thanks

marijanacrepulja commented 1 year ago

Hi @amilan17, @sebvi updated the text for the note under discipline 0 - meteorology, category 20 - Atmospheric Chemical Constituents I believe we can update the note in FT2022-2 draft document. Do we have the note in the branch, I can't see it. Thanks

amilan17 commented 1 year ago

I can update both branch and document. Is this the new note? "The net source is the sum of all the atmospheric (chemical) processes creating and destroying constituent/aerosol of ozone in the column"

sebvi commented 1 year ago

@amilan17 nope, "of ozone" is striked through... maybe I remove all the striked through text if it is confusing. :)

amilan17 commented 1 year ago

new note will be: "The net source is the sum of all the atmospheric (chemical) processes creating and destroying chemical constituents or aerosols in the column."
