AI2020-1: Create DOIs/PIDs status and plans document #12

All WDC and Contributing networks provide information on what they have implemented including information on DOIs / PIDs structure and who mints them. If not implemented describe consultations, considerations, reference, plans.

Implementation finished for WDCA and WDCRG, example: https://doi.org/10.48597/B5R6-3FSR

WOUDC DOI implementation: https://woudc.org/about/data-policy.php#dois

Interesting! The 2 examples above illustrate 2 different approaches concerning granularity, which are both in line with the DOI specification, but which offer different options for use cases. WOUDC identifies one dataset per instrument type for their whole network, independent of version. WDCA and WDCRG identify data streams per instrument and station, also identifying the different versions.

ICOS data lifecycle document: https://doi.org/10.18160/D2JV-KB6B All data objects are assigned a Handle PID per station and instrument and in most cases ECV. This includes daily raw data (L0) and daily NRT growing data (L1), L2 final quality controlled data (hourly data since start of measurement) per station. Same for L3 (spatiotemporal or elaborated) data. Collections of data per station and per release are minted a Handle PID and a Datacite DOI. Also individual data objects can be minted a DOI. Data objects are versioned and newer versions deprecate older versions, but the old data and PIDs are persistent and linked to the newer data.
