Is there an established process for assigning notations to 1-01-01?
@amilan17 the notations in the code table and the variable id in the OSCAR database are the same. Therefore we need to add the variables (provisionally) in OSCAR, where they get an id, and then assign this id as a notation in the proposal. I think it makes sense to wait with this until a proposal was confirmed by experts and is ready for the fast track, so that we don't add variables in OSCAR which need to be deleted later, because they were not accepted.
@RMaerz - will find someone to review this list
@ferrighi - will find someone to review this list
I might have found a contact for review, but I think it is kind of difficult to review for them without guidelines. Do we want some feedback for completeness of this table, or more a review of consistency between name/description?
@ferrighi, I think some comments on the following aspects would be helpful for us:
@ferrighi Thanks, what we need is actually both. I am confident that the list is already in fairly good shape, but a domain expert's perspective is most welcome. There are no strict guidelines I could give, I am afraid.
I have an update on this. Unfortunately the group I got in contact with is working with insect pollination, and cannot really help with this list, as they do not directly work with plants or air-pollinated species.
A first statement from our bio-met. section in Freiburg is expected next Tuesday
Received following response from our responsible team in Freiburg, if stakeholder Bernhard Clot agrees this could be integrated into the first draft:
\Atmosphere\Bioaerosol\Pollen\Pinaceae\Total Pinaceae Pinaceae can be differentiated up to genus, that means
\Atmosphere\Bioaerosol\Pollen\Pinaceae\Abies \Atmosphere\Bioaerosol\Pollen\Pinaceae\Picea \Atmosphere\Bioaerosol\Pollen\Pinaceae\Larix \Atmosphere\Bioaerosol\Pollen\Pinaceae\Pinus
The following are missing
\Atmosphere\Bioaerosol\Pollen\Salicaceae\Salix
\Atmosphere\Bioaerosol\Pollen\Amaranthaceae\Chenopodium
\Atmosphere\Bioaerosol\Pollen\Asteraceae\Solidago
\Atmosphere\Bioaerosol\Pollen\Poaceae\Secale \Atmosphere\Bioaerosol\Pollen\Poaceae\Zea mays

\Atmosphere\Bioaerosol\Pollen\Fagaceae\Total Fagaceae
\Atmosphere\Bioaerosol\Pollen\Salicaceae\Total Betulaceae - could be removed if the genus Ostrya will be considered

\Atmosphere\Bioaerosol\Pollen\Moraceae\Total Moraceae | Total Moraceae | Mulberry family pollen |
Regarding the removal of the following terms, the important question is, whether there are measurements of for example beech family pollen, which don't distinguish between the genera. If yes, it makes sense to keep "Total Fagaceae" as the observed variable for the entire family. If not, I agree, that the term should be removed.
Feedback from Bernard Clot:
Dear Franziska,
From my point of view, the additions are ok. The first list intended only to suggest a structure for the database, providing some typical examples from Europe. The question is: what is the goal, where should we stop, do we intend to list all the possible pollen types that can be found in the air? Such a list can be as long as the list of plants… in the present document, we have proposals from central-western Europe, one could easily add hundreds of taxa if considering other areas of the world. My suggestion would be to limit the list to pollen types that have a certain importance/impact (abundance, allergenicity, etc.) over large areas in relation with the capacity to monitor their airborne concentrations and the use of the data. It might not be the case for some of the additional taxa proposed. However, defining this “short list” would require precise criteria. In a pragmatic attempt, we could in some cases, stay at the family level.
Open for discussion.
Kind regards, Bernard

As I'm not a biologist stakeholder or others with specific knowledge have to decide
Will this list be crosschecked with what we have in Common Code Table 14? see https://github.com/wmo-im/CCT/blob/master/C14.csv, entries from 62100 to end.
If necessary, should we establish a merged list and implement it both here and in CCT14?
Thanks for your comment @sebvi. The file @RMaerz uploaded also contains a mapping with all pollen variables of CCT-14,. The variables from this table were actually the starting point from which the list above was developed.
@fstuerzl this is great! Once the list is reviewed and consolidated we may want to open an issue in https://github.com/wmo-im/CCT to keep both lists in sync.

@ferrighi @RMaerz Please confirm proposal.
@fstuerzl I don't seem to find a confirmation about the removal of:
only a confirmation about the additions.
@ferrighi, this was proposed by DWD in the file, which @RMaerz uploaded recently:
additions were again reviewed by Endler Christina cendler@exch.dwd.de and Smukalla Renate rsmukall@exch.dwd.de with latest comments (formatted in red ...):

As I'm not a biologist stakeholder or others with specific knowledge have to decide
and in https://github.com/wmo-im/wmds/issues/234#issuecomment-805746303.
To summarise:
name | comment |
---|---|
Total Fagaceae | from DWD point of view yes, this can be removed because all genera are clearly distinguishable (Fagus, Quercus, Castanea). Or which pollen should be addressed here? |
Total Salicaceae | from DWD point of view yes, this can be removed because the both genera Populus and Salix are clearly distinguishable |
Total Betulaceae | could be removed if the genus Ostrya will be considered |
Good @fstuerzl then I think we are ready to proceed with this. The proposal seems to be in line with requests and review.
Since the path is not part of the codes.wmo.int/wmdr registry, but tags have been proposed as an alternative, should these tags now be included in the branch? Specifically, bioaerosol
for all entries, pollen
and fungi
where applicable.
Other than that, I recommend the issue to be promoted to 'validated'.
Agree, so Atmosphere as implicit domain, but for the tags for example: \Atmosphere\Bioaerosol\Pollen\Oleaceae\Olea name: Olea Tag: [Bioaerosols, Pollen] or [Bioaerosols, Pollen, Oleaceae] ?
@ferrighi I think, we need to have "Bioaerosols, Pollen, Oleaceae" as tags, otherwise we lose the biological taxonomy. I'll make the change from paths to tags later. In this case they are unambiguous, so the tags don't contain more information than the paths.
Team agreed to include all parts of the path as tags, then move to 'validated'. @fstuerzl @ferrighi please confirm once done.
Paths replaced by tags: https://github.com/wmo-im/wmds/compare/Issue234
@joergklausen moved to validated now.

Proposal
New categories: Bioaerosol: Pollen, Fungi
The tags for the new pollen and fungi variables represent the taxonomy by including the family as a subcategory.
Reason
The category of bioaerosol variables is missing in the WIGOS vocabulary. Adding those terms would also allow a mapping with variables in the Common Code Table C-14.
