I know I'm referring to the devel branch which may be changed a lot in the future but I wanted to try giving a helpful suggestion regarding the CMake build.

You may want to consider a tool to take care of the CMake stuff for you like:

cmake-basis - I've worked on that
biicode - I've tried this, decent
hunter & polly - developer is pretty responsive

Here is a best practices slideshow which only covers super simple cases but may be useful.
