Subtitles encoding not recognized #687

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Load a video file.
2. Load a subtitle file with a non-ASCII text.
3. Play the video.

With UTF-8, non-ASCII characters are missing or displayed as ??.

With sigle-byte encodings which use extended ASCII table (chars 128-255), most 
characters are also displayed incorrectly. Tried Serbian/Croatian language with 
CP1250 and ISO-8859-2.

Automatic detection should be possible with UTF-8 (for example, VLC does that 
well). For single-byte encodings, there could be a menu to select the 
apropriate one.

I use gnome-mplayer 1.0.8 on x86_64 Slackware Linux, although this is probably 
not important.

Did you happen to set the Edit->Preferences Language Settings and adjust the 
settings and see if any of those help.

Tried UTF-8, as well as cp1250 and iso-8859-2 encoded subtitles, each with both 
Serbian and Croatian languages selected in Language Settings, but it did not 
help.

It seems that Language Settings only says which subtitle to chose if there are 
several of them present in media file (in container formats which allow it).

ok, can you send me a sample file (post them in this issue) and screen shots 
showing what you think it should look like (from VLC) and what it does look 
like. With that information I should be able to figure out how to make it work.

You also might try setting the encoding to 'enca' if your mplayer supports it 
as that is supposed to read the file and determine the proper encoding.

The -subcp enca:language:codepage option did not work, however -subcp codepage 
works very well! I tried it with UTF-8 and CP1250. I suppose gnome-mplayer 
could pass both options to mplayer, or do something similar to ensure that 
subtitles work on every system.

Forgot to say: since there is a way for mplayer to properly show subtitles, I 
suppose that testing with VLC is now not necessary. I made both screenshots 
with mplayer.

I think you just missed the setting on the subtitle preference page. See the 
attached image where the preference is shown in the screen about 1/2 way down.
