It may be useful to show hints to help user understand what is going on.

The hints could be displayed in status bar, in message bar or as tooltips

I think we need a bit of a spec what to show actually.

It would be good to have e.g. a widget similar to message bar at the bottom of map canvas, which could be used by some map tools (including node tool) to show some information or gather some user input (see https://hub.qgis.org/issues/15177 ).
