I noticed upon the installation of the extension that the default setting for the trigger mode is always. Whilst I appreciate this "could" be a more attractive option from a business-model perspective if the extension was in any way related to OpenAI. I still believe this is hugely wasteful.
As much as ChatGPT is hugely beneficial and helpful in many cases and I use it myself very often, most of the day-to-day web search queries nowadays (be it Google or others) will still not be such where one will get any benefit from the ChatGPT's response. Therefore enabling by default the setting where OpenAI's GPT-3 is queried upon every single web search of an extension user is hugely wasteful, both economically and environmentally (considering the well-known high resource requirements of ML applications) as well.
With over 1 000 000 installations on Chrome Web Store alone as of today, this setting is having a significant impact.
I believe the setting should be changed to manually as the default for the new extension installations.
