1.) Film Network Web App
This project seems like a perfect fit for me. Last semester I took Intro to Data Science (CS 1656) as well as Programming Languages for Web Apps (CS 1520). In the latter, I was able to gain experience using JavaScript for front-end development and Python and Flask for back-end development through the projects in the class. I also have experience using CSS from my web development courses in High School. In 1656 we spent an extensive amount of time using SQL for querying databases and through that course, I learned to really enjoy working with data using SQL. At the end of this course, we also learned how to use Neo4j for graph databases using movie data which I also really enjoyed. On top of this relevant experience, movies and film are an interest of mine and my sister has an MFA in film, so this project seems like it would be extremely fun to work on and a good fit for me. Additionally, the student that pitched this project is someone I have worked with in the past and someone I get along with well, so I would love the opportunity to work with them on this as well. Also, in addition to speaking with Bruno about working together, we have been talking with Pawel Morysewicz as he is another person that I have worked with in the past and we feel that we would work well together as a group.
2.) Allegheny County Policing Project (ACPP) v.2.0
As previously mentioned, in my CS 1520 class I was able to gain experience using Python for back-end web development. Because of this, I feel that my previous experience is adequate to work on this project. The subject matter however is the thing that draws me to this project the most. Social justice and police reform movements are something that I care about deeply and being able to contribute to this project would be a great opportunity to combine the skill learned in my major with my political beliefs, something I have been dreaming to be able to do for a while now.
3.) The skills of college education and successful careers
This is yet another project where the skills learned in my CS 1520 course, like my experience with JavaScript, are helpful. The data visualization shown in the professor’s presentation was incredibly interesting and working on something like that would be very fun. The subject matter is also one that I personally find interesting, and it is a project that I could foresee helping a lot of people.
