Google Chat/Phone call to recap on progress #63

Open lhsairplanes opened 11 years ago

lhsairplanes commented 11 years ago

Hey man,

Lets have a short phone call/google chat this week to recap on our goals, and clear things up with this project.

When are you free, or in other words, what's your class/work schedule?

Cheers,

Jet

Cools, call me anytime b4 11:30 tonite

lhsairplanes commented 11 years ago

Got your schedule, thanks. I have a few pages made for jethrochan.com. You said you could help me configure apache and the server to link my domain name to the amazon server so I will be able to add my web pages to jethrochan.com and play with JQuery and Ruby on Rails there. Contact me if you need my Godaddy.com user info to connect my domain name to the server. Let me know when you can work with me to link my domain name to the Amazon server.

wontonst commented 11 years ago

give me the path to the root directory of jethrochan.com

point DNS A to our server's IP in your domain registrar

actually, i just configured it in advance

point the DNS A to our server's IP, and then place your home pages into /home/jetchan/public_html (i created this for you)

if it doesn't work, make sure proper chmod is set

Cools, thanks for the update.

On my domain host, what do I put under the NS1, NS2 fields domain fields. Ideally, if I am getting this correctly, it should be something related to our Amazon server's IP, but the server's IP address doesn't look like something that would go under the domain provider ns1, ns2 url field's format?

On the unix server side on the amazon server? If I recall correctly, I need to run an allocate command to link the domain name to the server? Did you run that command for jethrochan.com already?

-Jethro

wontonst commented 11 years ago

i dont know what this allocate thing is, i set up a new virtual host to serve jethrochan.com

ns1 ns2 i think are for mail server, you want to look for A and alias

Cools, will give that a try and see if that works

Thanks

On godaddy, there was a section in the domain settings that says: "Host Name: Manage". There, I added our server's IP address 184.73.232.178. That's what I found when I google searched. On another search I found this topic: http://www.wix.com/support/main/html5/domains-email/setting-domain-other-hosts-ie-networksolutions-godaddy-etc/connecting-your-godaddy, which does sound irrelevant. However, I can't find anything on DNS A regarding godaddy domain names. Problem is if I go back to jethrochan.com, its still on the godaddy page even after I added our IP to the Host Name field on GoDaddy's setting page. Maybe I did it right, maybe I didn't. View the email godaddy sent below. I can give you my GoDaddy account info if you want to see it for yourself.

This is what GoDaddy sent me in an email: The registration of 184.73.232.178.JETHROCHAN.COM has succeeded. Changes may take 24-48 hours to be visible on the Internet

wontonst commented 11 years ago

its a bit tricky i'd google something like "godaddy dns setup" or something like that

also note that DNS propagation isn't instant and can take 24hrs

Cool, plan is to wait 24 hrs. Anyhow, when that time comes, since you have done this before, do we expect jethrochan.com to be a blank screen then since nothing has been put onto the server for jethrochan.com? Otherwise, how can we confirm if the process happened successfully?

wontonst commented 11 years ago

put index.html in /home/jetchan/public_html that says "It works!" or something

choosing the perfect typography is up to you, since you are a master with pens and caligraphy! so lets hear some suggestions ;)

graphics still in progress, i will have a contact me box on the right of the picture, but i need a wise way to design it, hence why it's still non-existence.
