updates for python 3 #363

removed (object) calls
removed old super() calls
converted strings to f-strings
sorted imports
cleaned whitespace
simplified conditionals
added trailing commas where required

There are many unrelated changes in here. If you want to pursue this, a separate MR for each part would be good. With respect to cosmetic changes, I'm going to setup a pre-commit file to standardize all that someday .
