@YizhouDing Hello! Jenny and I are trying to work on this issue and I was wondering if we could discuss this issue with you! I would appreciate it if you could let me know your discord or phone number or whatever works for you Thank you so much :)
The two places you can discuss this with me are 1) here in the issue, via comments, or 2) during our meetups. Discord is for any discussion not about a specific issue. Since we're not meeting until Wednesday, post your questions here.
Hi Amy! i just wanted to get some clarification for some of the designers on my team on an issue they're working on. they completed a mockup for issue #319 that was started by a designer from last quarter. the previous designer had already started the mockup for a pop tutorial on the search bar features, so they assumed it was okay for them to finish the pop up design for it. but they told me after talking to you in class, they were unsure if you wanted them to change the design to be in the same layout as the learn and how they should move forward with this issue. Please let me know your thoughts so I can provide them some clarification! Thank you!
Good question @mynahshetty11! There are some key elements to our design process at play here:
Design work that previous designers have done is not necessary good design work. Designer should approach every problem with a fresh perspective, and not assume that the early sketches a previous designer did were necessarily finished or nearly ready. In this case, the "initial draft" language, and the fact that it's labeled needs design
indicates that this issue is at the very beginning of being designed, not something that just needed a bit of polish.
Consistency matters. As we note in our contributor guidelines, consistency is a key principle, and the initial design sketch proposed here is very inconsistent with the existing ways that Wordplay teaches how the interface works. (Tooltips, and widget highlights as seen in the tutorial). It's a designer's responsibility to ensure consistency, and so the initial sketch above was not a good place to start.
The key mistake here is assuming. The best thing to do with any design issue is communicate: ask questions, consult with me, ask for guidance. Doing that before starting any design work is always a good idea.
For this particular design, the key question to explore is how should Wordplay teach interfaces? Should we use a step-by-step tutorial metaphor (which users often skip), shall we use the current conventions of tooltips and widget highlights, as seen in the current interface? We have to resolve those questions before we every start doing interface prototypes.
It's the end of Winter! Please provide an update on this issue, including:
If you do plan to continue work on it, carry on. Otherwise, thank you for your contributions!

What's the problem?
For a Wordplay user and novice programmer, using the search bar might be initially perplexing, especially when confronted with unicodes and glyphs.
What's the design idea?
Offering tutorials to guide them through our features would be beneficial, helping them navigate and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Who benefits?
New Wordplay user and novice programmers would benefit most from this tutorial.
