Sharing: Add support for Republicizing posts #7487

Open rachelmcr opened 6 years ago

rachelmcr commented 6 years ago

Expected behavior

Calypso offers a "republicize" feature to Premium and Business plan owners that lets them share a post again after publishing it. (Details in the support doc.) You get to it from My Sites > Blog Posts > Ellipsis menu (for a specific post) > Share.

Here's how that looks on the web:

Other plan owners see an upgrade nudge there:

Actual behavior

Currently there's no equivalent feature for republicizing/resharing a post in the app.

The Android app is also missing the option to control publicize settings per post, which could go hand in hand with an enhancement like this: https://github.com/wordpress-mobile/WordPress-Android/issues/4376

Removed the [Status] Stale label because this is still a valid request.

For reference, here is what the more menu looks like when you tap the "••• More" menu for a post from the posts list.

@ScoutHarris I see that Stats is an option there, do you think that would be a good place to add the option for Premium and Business plan owners to re-share posts to connected social media accounts?

Hey @designsimply .

I'm confused by where you're suggesting the re-share option go (as from what I can tell this has nothing to do with Stats). But if you're referring to adding a Share option to the ellipsis menu like Calypso does, sounds reasonable to me. Maybe some designers would care to pipe in, but I think we do have other places where we launch Share from an action sheet.

I was thinking of adding it to the individual post stats screen (mainly because I saw a similar-ish-sounding "Share Post" option on the "Latest Post Summary" inside Stats > Insights and thought we could maybe do something similar. Now that I think more about it though, it'd likely have problems with discoverability there.

+1 for design input about this case! ❤️

I was thinking of adding it to the individual post stats screen ...

Oh, I see!

it'd likely have problems with discoverability there.

Yea, I'd have to agree. I'm not sure one would think to go to Stats to share a post.

Thanks for the ping @ScoutHarris.

I was thinking of adding it to the individual post stats screen

What I like about this is its contextual to my stats, which might be one motivation to share. i.e. "oh no only X people have viewed my post" and 'Share' becomes a solution. However if I'm not in that moment, and instead I'm actively seeking out an option to 'share' I don't think I would navigate through stats to find it. The ellipsis/more menu feels like the natural place to me and mimicks Calypso.

I wanted to test this. I know this post is about 're-sharing' an already published post. But I went through the initial publishing flow. And I did not having any social media accounts connected. I noticed that when I had no accounts connected, there was no option in the menu. Once I connected one, it was an option in 'post settings'. But another thing we could do is have a prompt to connect a social account in 'post settings' if none yet exists.

One last note that in #7954 I made mocks for adding duplicate post functionality to the post more/ellipsis menu. So maybe there is a broader epic around adding Calypso post functionality to the apps. I don't know if historically there is a reason why we didn't build some of those features into the app, or just time contraints.

Still valid! 🙂

To prepare:

To test:

  1. Go to My Site > Blog Posts > More menu (three dots).
  2. Look for an option to share a post or share a post again (only available to WordPress.com Premium or Business).

Result: the option to re-share a post is not available in the app.
