Custom Post Types, Custom Taxonomies, & Custom Fields

There are existing APIs for editing custom fields in WP, we just need an interface for them. Since it's not used by the majority of users, probably best to keep this hidden by default.

My site is deeply based on the use of a custom post type + custom fields. I just can't manage my site with the WordPress default iOS App, as long as it allows me to manage only default posts and pages. Is there a route to make the necessary changes for the app to work with a custom post type + custom fields? How about sites that deeply rely on custom fields management through plugins such as ACF, Types, CMB2 etc?

A recent app review (1 star) mentioned the lack of support for custom post types, in particular portfolios:

it is not easy to add and edit portfolio projects and media from the iOS app honestly not user friendly for artists without this feature i can edit pages blog posts but can't handle media and my portfolio projects without going to mobile safari browser this it a great app however without those abilities it is a bit of a fail ... those should be part of the apps publish bar for the users would totally give app 5 stars if those were part of the iOS app

A recent app review (4 stars) asks for custom post types:

Unlike the new WordPress.com experience this does not support custom post types, taxonomies, or meta fields. If this worked then it would be the best app for any blog. Unfortunately without this support it's annoying to bounce between Safari and this app.

Our client requested the ability to edit the CPTs we created with the iOS App. Found this thread while troubleshooting. Is this in the works, on the horizon, not happening? Would like to respond with an update from the team managing issues. Thanks in advance. ~Steve

there is no way to access editing portfolio pages like you can on safari—please fix! ive been using the app to work on a blob and am just starting a new one to showcase artwork, being able to edit portfolio pages in the app would be very convenient!

Is there any engineering justification for why accessing a custom post type is too difficult? Or is this a business decision?

Given this thread is almost 6 years old and custom fields seem to be losing ground across the WP ecosystem, I can’t help but think another +1 on this will not move the needle here.

I'm adding custom taxonomies to this enhancement request, per https://github.com/wordpress-mobile/WordPress-iOS/issues/6753. (The request for custom taxonomies support has come from a WordPress.com VIP client and a past app review.)

@heavybeard no news yet! This not on the roadmap that I am aware of though it's also not a simple task to make such an update. The best thing we can do right now is encourage people to contact support or post a note here when they find the would like the same thing. It also helps very much to have a bit of background about why the update would be helpful to each person!

would be 5🌟 if.... I can almost run my entire website off this app on my ipad and phone, if you would just add portfolio support to the app I would never need the browser, in fact it can be frustrating because I will start prepping my media in the app and then I remember that I cannot finish the post without switching to the browser. please add this it would make my day!!!!!

No CPT which makes the app mostly useless for other than for a simple blog The macOS app has CPT support while this app simply undermines the power of Wordpress by being insufficient to the task

This issue is open since 8 years. It's 2021 and we still need a desktop device to properly manage a customized Wordpress site. Using the webbased wp-admin on a phone is not handy at all and lacks app-like performance and features. So can we build it on our own? What are the reasons why this does not yet exist?

I downloaded the app on my iPad assuming I'd be able to use it to manage my site. However, my site heavily relies on CPTs, so apparently it's a no-go.

Given how important a part CPTs are to the WP ecosystem, I was shocked by the omission; even more so when I see how long this request has been languishing.

CPT support should be a no-brainer since most CPTs behave just like normal posts. It shouldn't be too hard to get the data from the main application to display. Even a web-view would be nice.

I agree with everyone. Why is there no CPT integration. That said. Let’s talk solutions for site management on mobile.

What are you guys doing? Have you found any workflow solutions? Media library is problem I’m facing. Most clients have an iphone. I’m having client upload to a shared Dropbox folder. Problem is Wp doesn’t always like Dropbox when adding media.

Any suggestions. Solutions. Using images in CPT posts.

...One thing that is strangely missing is being able to write posts in Markdown. I’ve been writing on my phone long before this app, so I am used to writing in Markdown for things like headings, lists, separators, etc that I would later copy + paste into the WP editor when back at my computer. Even on my computer I use markdown while writing posts because it saves on time. Alas, typing ## and the return key does not turn my block into an H2. My custom post types also don’t show up in the app, nor do any post types or blocks created by plugins. I’m hoping support for these things come soon - this app would be perfect if it did!

The most important content areas on my site use custom post types.

The app is largely useless to me without the ability to edit custom post types.
