It shouldn't....I will check but I am fairly certain that if the videos are in their expected spot on disk, it should only be conducting an rsync only the differences. I will check and report back.
I think the new KA-Lite 0.15 is no longer installed by a Git pull... I'll see if I can update the script while I'm working on an install now
I have an updated script on github under the beta branch. I would not use it yet as I need to fix add a couple small checks. I also included an rsync option for the kacontent folder so we only sync updated videos.
The script will check for an older version and remove it for you. I am going to attempt to have it backup/restore the database as well.
Close to final 0.15.0 updater...there seems to be a slight bug in the ability for ka-lite to start on reboot. Trying to pinpoint the cause.
I've got a few devices running 0.15 ka-lite on reboot. Here's my manual process for doing so:
/var/ka-lite/bin/kalite stop
sudo rm /etc/init.d/kalite
sudo update-rc.d kalite remove
sudo nano rachel-scripts.sh
add this in there: sudo kalite start
cd /var
sudo rm -r /var/ka-lite wget https://learningequality.org/r/deb-bundle-installer-0-15
sudo dpkg -i /var/deb-bundle-installer-0-15

Jeremy,
1. Contact at FLE for help with Benchmarking
If you emailed your contact at FLE and copied me, I think it would really help me. I am stuck trying to get Selenium Student, the automated browser tester to run. I tried the Selenium Script below after I installed and started the normal (non-developer) version of Kalite 0.15.0 on a MacBook with Leopard OS. (Other working Macs here have been upgraded to El Capitan.)
./kalite/manage.py benchmark seleniumstudent --url= http://rasp.pi.IP.address:8008 --clients=4 --duration=2
It's not clear to me if:
a.) I need to install a developers version of KA-Lite b.) If the Selenium Student based web browser similulation is still included in 0.15.x c.) If I need to install Selenium on my browser or if Selenium is called by the Python scripts d.) if KA-Lite needs to be running or just installed to run the scripts that run the Selenium Student test clients e.) if I should use 0.15.x to get the Selenium Student scripts or an earlier version of KA-LIte
2. Upgrade on my Pi
I cannot wait for you and Sam to release your preferred set up for KA-Lite 0.15.0 on the Pi. I am ready to build another 64 GB SD card just to run these tests.
I want to try the tests on the Pi2 and an i7 workstation with 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Server then do the latest upgrade on the CAP and see if it falls in the middle.
Best, Ed
Hi Ed,
Did the unit I sent you not have 0.15 on it already? Let's open a GitHub issue, they've been very responsive there. Do you have a GitHub account?
best, Jeremy
Jeremy,
I will open an issue. I did not see any thread in this area, so I was going to check first, but opening an issue might be more efficient.
The unit which you set did have 0.15.0, but I may have an old kernel.
pi@rachel / $ uname -r 3.18.9-v7+
Jessie and Jessie Lite were released about 20 days ago both based on Kernel 4.1, but that may be a Raspberry Pi Kernel version.
RASPBIAN JESSIE LITE https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/ Minimal image based on Debian Jessie Version: November 2015 Release date:2015-11-21 Kernel version:4.1
Also, FLE just release 15.0.1, but the changes listed with the release announcement on the Google Group were very minor.

Okay...big day! Try the new installer/updater. It's current to KA Lite version 0.15.1 and provides us a way to update future installs as well. Let me know of ANY bugs!
Awesome. Will do right now. Presumably the same options of 1/2/3 for update.sh to choose whether to format the 2.5" drive also?

Sam,
Thanks. I will do my best to get load this and try it and report back before I sleep.
Two quick questions, if you promise not to spend more that 5 minutes googling. I have not given up myself. I am off for an appointment for the next 90 minutes.
Thanks again, Ed

@bnordha Bernd, You'll like this...I use our rsync to only replicate that changed files when downloading content.
I just noticed a small issue with importing the khan_assessment.zip file. The KA Lite installer is broken; at least for our device. I fixed it and filed a bug report. It has to do with having multiple file partitions. That said, I added a couple lines to our install code that fixes the issue and allows for the installation of the khan_assessment.zip file.
Lines 1118-1121:
# The current khan_assessment.zip installer provided by KA Lite throws on error on our system
echo; printStatus "Fixing the KA Lite provider khan_assessment.zip installer."
sed -i "s/os.rename/shutil.move/g" /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/kalite/contentload/management/commands/unpack_assessment_zip.py
sed -i '6 a import shutil' /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/kalite/contentload/management/commands/unpack_assessment_zip.py
You can run the KA Lite install option again if you have already used it since the 0.15.1 update. Just select no to all the options. This will skip the reinstall and downloading of files and just fix the issue identified. I also filed a bug report with the KA Lite folks.
Thanks, Sam. I sent out a couple devices without this fix. I had spot tested KA-lite and exercises and didn't notice any issues. Was I missing something? Where would I have noticed a problem with the exercises?

@ed I didn't have a chance to check. However, PAE is supported by the processor. When I dropped in my 4GB memory, the bios recognized the 4GB; however, the OS did not. I believe our kernel does not have PAE enabled on it. I tried following the attached guide but we don't have enough space on our bios partition so it failed. I can try to change the layout as a test but it will be a little while before I can do so. Feel free to try.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE/Enabling
This is a brief guide on how to enable a PAE https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE kernel on Ubuntu. Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal) and onwards
The generic default kernel already has PAE enabled.
For more on this, please see the Quantal technical overview https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QuantalQuetzal/TechnicalOverview/Alpha1#Linux_kernel_3.4, and the announcement https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2012-May/035176.html by the Ubuntu Technical Board. Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise)
Both the CD and DVD installer of Ubuntu automatically installs the PAE enabled kernel if it detects more than 3 Gb of available memory. In the case of the liveCD, a working network connection is required, since the PAE enabled kernel packages are not present on the CD.
If you need to enable PAE manually, follow the instructions below. Enabling PAE manually
The PAE enabled kernel can be installed using the Synaptic Package Manager (accessible from the System menu under Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager): The relevant packages are called "linux-generic-pae" and "linux-headers-generic-pae" and should be easily found with a search for "pae".
Alternatively they can be installed using either apt-get or aptitude through the terminal:
sudo apt-get install linux-generic-pae linux-headers-generic-pae
After a reboot the PAE kernel should be booted as the default option in the GRUB boot menu.
To confirm that PAE was enabled correctly you can use the system monitor form the System menu under Administration -> System Monitor. The first tab shows usable memory. Removing non-PAE kernels
If PAE was successfully enabled you may want to remove the meta-packages for the normal kernel, in order to disable unnecessary updates to the non-PAE kernels:
sudo apt-get remove linux-generic linux-image-generic linux-headers-generic
If you want to remove all of the old kernels from your boot menu, it seems like you have to do it all manually:
sudo apt-get remove linux-image-
Something went wrong
If something went wrong, just remove the PAE kernel packages using either synaptic or apt-get/aptitude. If you did not specifically remove the non-PAE kernel packages, they should still be present on the system and automatically selected as the default when the PAE kernel is removed.
The relevant PAE kernel packages are:
linux-image-generic-pae linux-image-

- Does PAE or LPAE help with addressing more than the physical RAM?
- If yes and, even if no, how can we check if PAE or LPAE is enabled in the kernel we are using? I know both the Pi and the CAP have the pad or lpae feature listed in the /proc/cpuinfo file, but I am not sure if that guarantees that it is enabled for the Kernel to use.

Interesting...my upload speeds are 50MB. I have no issue with putting them in the UK but I will need to add a question on the script to request a region for downloading from. That will drive where they pull there data? If you are having speed issues from the US, than something else is going on.
Using the script ~278kb/s: [image: pasted1] Using the KA-lite site (10.5 MB/s):

Definitely better. It's hovering between 1.5 MB/s and 2 MB/s.
I'm still trying to figure out if the 15 units I sent out yesterday need to be recalled for the assessment items. Did you get an error during installation of the assessment items when going straight from FLE? There was no reason for me to think there was anything wrong with them so I'm trying to see how you noticed there was an issue. Hoping maybe your issue didn't affect my shipments (though that's probably wishful thinking).

Okay, I'll flip to KA Lite as primary download and failover to ours in the script.

That has the error I rec'd on install. I do think your units would have been affected as I tried install from the command line and it failed. If you didn't send them with a USB, we could send them a USB to run the recovery from which would fix the issue. The khan_assessment is installed on the root (fairly certain but I will check). sam

What's so strange to me is that currently using:
wget https://learningequality.org/r/deb-bundle-installer-0-15
sudo dpkg -i /var/deb-bundle-installer-0-15
I get no errors or failure at the command line. I'm installing as root. I don't even see where in the process it downloads new assessment items though.
Sending you weaved access to a couple devices, will you see if you think the error occurred for me also? I have not yet run the scripts for assessment items (I have for weaved). I'm still using the 1.2.15 USB recovery tool you created as that's just world's easier than creating a usb for 1.2.16 and running all the scripts.

You won't get an error with the default installer. It has a small set of assessment items included. The update zip file includes assessment items for all assessment items. That is my understanding of the way it works. I have not confirmed that with KA.
I think you're deployed CAPs are fine. However, we could always add the assessment items remotely if you want me to. Just let me know.

I was able to download in about 10 hours overnight, but we are finally getting good Internet from Time Warner NYC. (I just agreed with Verizon they could put fiber on the back wall of brownstone, so we will have the long promised competion.)
Uganda is getting a lot better snd should get even better now that Google's wholesale fiber network is being resold by urban WiFi companies.
Still we are going to be depend upon SD Cards and external hard drives until FLE releases the compressed videos as an option for downloads through the Manage Videos tabs.
I have uploaded to our Google Drives a spreadsheet that is a key to the videos, so we could host our own modules of compressed videos with the Raspberry Pi foundation if they and FLE would approve.
Best, Ed

Hi, I've been following this a little bit, just wanted to chime in on this point:

There's a few different versions of the KA Lite deb file floating around:
kalite manage setup
command and following the interactive prompt. That requires an internet connection. Please open an issue if it doesn't work correctly. It's also possible to download the assessment item file separately and install it using the unpack_assessment_zip
management command, and I'm aware that @spatiald discovered a bug with that process (https://github.com/learningequality/ka-lite/issues/4751#issuecomment-163744578).OK, so what's a little confusing about 1. is that the khan_assessment.zip is a larger download (480MB) than the entire deb-bundle-installer-0-15 (~398MB). Is that just a compression thing? I've been using the deb-bundle-installer-0-15 and didn't notice missing assessmentitems, but Sam did.

@aronasorman says the zip file has no compression, whereas the deb does.
Sweet...modifying the install script to skip the assessment if already using the bundle install. We use it by default.
Really appreciate the feedback Michael and @aronasorman
Fixed in configure script KA Lite installer.
For those in remote locations, remember that you can locate all your install files locally and use the script in offline mode as well.
Great. I will run this as if I was in a remote location with no Internet access during the actual installation. Ed

Sweet, let me know. One note, if the original CAP hasn't been updated in a year. There are about 500+ new videos; just a we bit of bandwidth. If you have it on USB, no prob.

Is there a way to get the ka-lite deb to download directly from learning equality? Currently, I get bogged down to about 400kb/s when doing four simultaneous script runs, takes about 25x as long as when it downloads directly from learning equality. Is there anything functionally different when it downloads from the golearn archive?
Why not use the USB recovery as it has kalite preinstalled? It has 0.15.1 and the SQLite db.
Re the script - My concern with downloading directly is that their download links change location. I was trying to minimize having to mod the script for link changes. It doesn't make sense why your speeds are so slow. I will do research on my end with my provider...
Let me known if the USB recovery solves your prob...

I'm a little worried something is going on with the drivers in the USB recovery and some of this second shipment of CAPs. I am getting reports back of at least 10% of units with WiFi dropping and haven't a terrible time in my office maintaining a WiFi connection. I'm not sure what's going on, but the one unit I've done with the script is also having the problem now, so I'm not sure what's going on.
Some devices are getting hung at 10.10.10.10, which is strange because I don't know when that IP address even comes into play. Will test some more today and get back to you on this.

Leon just sent us an e-mail, and as of right now, his suggestion of commenting out the IPTABLES line has been amazing. That may be all that needs to change so far as I can tell
I was just reading his email. I will push an update to our USB Recovery and the configure script (it will be under the menu “Utilities” then “Repair Bugs”).
I don’t know “what changed” between older and newer CAPs. I’ll see if I can reverse engineer the gemtek script and build a version that only utilizes 10.10.10.10. I’ll let everyone know what I find out. sam
Great, it was strange timing but great that Leon at least found a work around while he was in Liberia. I'd rather err on the side of caution, is there any problem just using the 192.168.88.1?
This new set of CAPs has been fairly terrible. I've had 2 with no ethernet, and 2 that won't turn on. Plus Leon has one that's totally sluggish. They also have a 'collection' of different hard drives inside them. Something strange is going on
That sounds like feedback that needs to go to Bun and Intel. Their product is taking a turn for the worse in terms of production quality. There is no issue with just using 192.168.88.1 - I would rather just use it. It is hard coded into the gemtek code and that’s what I would have to figure out. Do you want me to check on the feasibility of using 10.10.10.10 or just forgo it for using the 192.168.88.1. Either way, it sounds like (from the various feedback), to remove the 10.10.10.10 on currently deployed versions.
Totally agree with everything you've said, and on using 192.168.88.1 as the right thing to do. I'll take the Intel convo off of GitHub here.
Currently, running the master script to update KA-Lite:
will result in the CAP attempting to redownload all videos from rachelfriends.org without the option to skip this step if the CAP already has them.
