CUDA 2.2 doesn't support 7.1 or earlier.

I have "Visual Studio 2005". I believe this is version 8. It works fine, so 
far. I
can surely update to anything we want. Should I upgrade? (I use Windows 
infrequently,
so I don't really care; but I'd rather not upgrade if I don't need to.)

You are fine for a while.  7.1 is 2003, and I think CUDA dropped support in 
2.1.  The
reason for dropping support is because supporting all these different compiler
versions is a nightmare for the CUDA development team.  So whenever they add 
new ones
they try to drop old ones.
